Cheap parts and the story behind them...

OK just thought this could be a bit funny. All of us at one time or another have bought some cheap-a** part,or parts, knowing we shouldn't, but did anyway. Tell your story of what, where and the outcome....

Re: Cheap parts and the story behind them...

Had a 400 go up in flames in my 1979 4x4. Had the heads and sold the short block to a guy building a 383. Was at a Adams Driveline in Henderson, NV getting drive shaft and mounts done for the T-5 conversion. Talking shop one of the guys pointed out they had a 400 block sitting in a trash can. "low miles" but oil soaked. Was in a drag car for awhile but left for dead. Few c-notes and a trip to the machine shop that had my heads, $1000 and I had one bad motor. The rebuild kits were on back order so they threw in Keith Black Hyperecentric flat tops for stock cost. Off the shelf Z-28 parts and they run two cams up from mine(500hp) and 100hp shot NOS in 1974 full body Camaro at 11sec.
Not bad for dumpster diving.

Re: Cheap parts and the story behind them...

in 2004 I picked up a set of rollers (kind of like go jaks) for my truck. They were a generic set out of one of those discount catalogs. For the life of me I couldnt see paying $1200 for a set of Go Jaks. These were on sale for $250. I thought why pay nearly a grand more for the name brand. these said they had a 1600lb capacity and the Go Jaks were rated for 1500lbs so I thought what the hell.

Now unlike Go Jaks, these didnt jack up the truck, they simply cradled the tires so I had to jack the truck up first. (1984 Ford F250 diesel), I placed the rollers under all the tires, and then lowered the truck onto them.......

Promptly squishing them to the ground.

I was furious so I grabbed the manual and was looking for the customer support number. Then I saw it.......the fine print..

1600lb capacity.........for the set of 4, not individually.
