Need help with crate engine, take ii ?

Okay, I hear you guys!!! I need the help....below is the the engine I am leaning towards (replacing the original 350, th350 tranny). You guys please "build" it from here...what tranny, carb, fuel pump, water pump, distributor.....and so on. I am not trying to build a street rod and I want everything to bolt right into place (no adding or cutting my 72). Please give me links and prices, or the name and web locations for the needed parts to complete(summit, jegs...). I want the best parts for the money spent!! You guys seem to know more about this than me, and this should be fun to see what you guys come up with!! Thanks!

I like this engine too. This is what I will be getting. If it was me I would bolt on stock exhaust manifolds put a 650 edelbrock carb on it. I bought the GM performance HEI distributor that I would put on it. You will need a new water pump, flex plate, on the fuel pump all you will need is a standard fuel pump nothing special

GM HEI, and I'd rebuild an old Holley 600 if I were you. I bought a new Edelbrock 1406 a couple years ago, and it's not made very well.

I agree with the HEI and then a 570 Street Avenger Holley carb with electric choke. And good set of manifolds or a real good set of coated headers no cheapos on this.
good set of MSD 8.8mm wires or a set of Taylor 8 mm wires.

Re: Need help with crate engine, take ii ?

I had this exact engine on a 1987 short bed with the 700 R4 tranny and loved it. Much more expensive than the TH350 trans. This time around I'm just gonna rebuild my TH350 trans.

Re: Need help with crate engine, take ii ?

if you change to a different trans you will need to modify the drive shaft and move the support.

Re: Need help with crate engine, take ii ?

Loose the flat tappet cam and put a roller cam in it, or buy a roller camed engine. Modern oils are not suitable for flat tappet cams and will wipe out the lobes, all the metal that comes off of the cam will get pumped through the engine and wipe out all the bearings.

Re: Need help with crate engine, take ii ?

So many different options. I was watching the other thread too.

Have you looked into running a 700R4 trans instead? It will have much more driveability and better fuel mileage on the freeway.

On this motor, this is what I would do with it:

Dist - MSD Streetfire (not the pro billet, just the Street version) They are very nice and made by MSD. It just doesn't say MSD on the box. I agree with Taylor or MSD wires (I think 8mm will be plenty, but 8.8mm is not going to hurt anything but your wallet)

Exhaust - I'd do a good set (reputable brand) of ceramic coated mid length headers and Magnaflows. I'm not sure if your truck has trailing arms but running the 5" dia round tube type mufflers sure do make things easy runnign the exhaust. They fit nicely under the truck. I have the 5"x22" long on my GMC and it sounds like a Nascar. Not loud, but .. it's definitely not wimpy either.

Carb - I would do a Holley Street Avenger or something similar. 570-650cfm IMO would be a nice fit. Electric Choke, vaccum secondaries.

Water Pump - Just a good over the counter parts store

Fuel pump - I usually do GM branded / AC Delco stuff. IF you decide to do an Edelbrock carb, be careful with the fuel pump. IF you have a regular OEM spec fuel pump and put it on the 1406 / 1407 Edelbrock it has too much pressure and will cause the carb to 'boil'. Edelbrocks also like to have a spacer underneath them, as well as a fuel pressure regulator (6psi max) FYI stock fuel pumps will do about 9psi depending on which one you have. The fuel pump + the spacer + fuel pressure regulator = success on the Eddy carbs. (That's why I say do a Holley )

Harmonic Balencer - I'd get an LT1 spec for it (8" diameter)

Valve Covers - GM DZ 302, LT1 finned aluminum. Best valve cover ever put on a small block IMO.

Hi torque starter
Interstate battery
Stock spec hoses, pulleys, etc.

.. did I miss anything? Did I say 700R4 ? .. realizing your drive shaft and trans cross member will have to change. But, it will all be worth the extra effort in the end.
