Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!

Wanting to buy a set of 20's for my 71 SWB C10. I know i want to go with 8.5's up front and 10's out back. Here is my question. My truck already has a 4/6 static drop and my plans are to go with a complete Porterbuilt set-up next year. I just need to know what backspacing to go with on the wheels so i dont have any issues next spring when i do the install of the Porterbuilt stuff.I also dont want the wheels to look odd on the truck before i do the drop. Need your help guys, and it would be nice if i could get someone from Porterbuilt to chime in, since they do this for a living. The truck is coils all the way around with the plans for tubular arms up front when i go with the extreme drop next spring.
Would also like to go with a little deeper dish in the rear! Please help! Thanks, Newbie!!

Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!

Sup buddy .. Welcome to the board

First, we need to know which rear end housing is in your truck. When you have a moment, lay down under the back of your truck and measure from the inside edge of one rear brake backing plate to the other. .. is this measurement 55.5" or more like 57" ?

Tell me more about your drop, is it 2" Spindles, 2" springs and 6" coils? Factory trailing arms and upper/lower control arms now? ..

I'll help you get it figured out. What kind of wheel are you looking at?

Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!

You can run the same backspace that you would run on a static dropped truck, that you would run on a truck laying out with PB suspension. It all depends on personal preference of where you want the wheels to sit. On a 71, it should have the wider rear end, but CC69Rat is right, you should measure to verify just in case.

Some like the wheels out to the edge, some want them tucked in. Also, your tire will play a role as well. I know it all may sound complicated with a lot of variables, but once we know a few specifics, we can get you squared away.

Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!

Thanks guys and you are correct the rear end comes in around 57". ive been looking at some of the new American Racing BLVD. and also the Burnouts. Also like everybodys favorite Coys C-5. Also like the Eagle Alloy 338. Hope this info helps. I just got the truck and it was already lowered. I asked the owner how it was lowered and he said it was that way when he got it but that he thinks the springs were heated.I was going to replace all the springs and add spindles and blocks to achieve the 5.5/7 drop. Let me know what ya think guys

Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!

That is really low on a static drop,.. do you like low(er) profile tires? Do you plan to keep your stock inner wheel wells in the front? Opposed to a mild C notch?

Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!

Yeah i dont mind low profile tires i knew id need them to accomplish a low static drop. Im not at all opposed to a notch cause ill be putting in a step notch once i get the porterbuilt stuff. Open for any suggestions . thanks guys

Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!

That is a low static drop. I would suggest a mild 4.5/6 (or 4.5/5) until you do the PB suspension. It would make things a little easier in regards to your notch and clearing inner fender wells.

Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!

I know that its a pretty low static drop ,but will that effect the offset of the wheels. Like i said i want the wheels to work with both the static drop and when im ready to go lower with the Porterbuilt stuff and air ride. Offset help please!!!

Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!

In short, the offset will be the same with the PB suspension as with a static drop..... at least how I like the wheels to sit and how we set them up. You will be good to go.

Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!

20x8.5 -5.375 to 5.5" bs up front
20x10 - 5.5 to 6" bs on the rear

255/40/20 (F) 295/40/20 (R)

I personally would do 5.5" in the front and 6" in the rear and maybe run a small spacer if needed till you lay it out. Once its laying frame you can pull the spacers out.

But were talking .25" here.. not a lot.

Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!

I believe n2billet's latest Porterbuilt Extreme Dropmember is running:

Front:
20x8.5 (5.25" BS) with 1" narrowed PB a-arms.

Rear:
22x10 (5.5" BS) with the narrower (67-69) rearend housing.

Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!

That's an idea too, run 5.25 bs up front as long as you have stock control arms then when she's on the dirt get Nates 1' narrowed arms and pull them in a bit. Sounds like a plan to me.

^^ do that same setup and swap rear end housings when you lay it out??

Several options.

3" in the front and 4" or 5" in the rear. I may go lower once I figure out exactly what I have. Just got the truck a few weeks ago and I've been away at work the whole time.

Sorry for the thread jack

X2,... as long as the rear wheel is 10" wide,... and it's just a static drop.
8" or 8.5" or 9" or 9.5" wide rear wheel will require a different backspace.

Thanks. For sure 10" if not 11". I've been trying to research as much as possible but until I figure out my exact setup and change it to how I want the truck it's been tough (especially to a noob ). I plan on starting my on thread once I get it figured out.

Sorry for jacking your thread cdog

Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!

heres mine with a pb front dropmember, and ART tubular arms. im running 255/35R20 tires on 20x8.5" rims. the fronts are a +35mm offset, and the back are a +10mm offset. no spacers or anything up front and nothing rubs, i can turn lock to lock a few inches off the ground. the back i am running a 1-1.25" spacer cant remember exactly but they clear the quarter panels as well without rubbing or hitting anything

Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!

Just for the record, my personal tastes tend to lean a little toward sacrificing a .25" of backspacing to gain a little room for more of a sidewall. I'm not saying a lower profile is bad.. I'm just saying my opinion may differ from most being a majority of the guys running 20s will use 40 series tires. Me I just set the wheel a little more underneath the truck so the section width of the tire has a little more breathing room.

Keith and Travis know this as well as the best in the business.. but I still like to try and help .. best of luck to you man.
