Anybody use stainless bolts?nuts? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I'm considering replacing all my bolts and nuts with stainless on the reassembly of my truck and was wondering if anyone else has done this?I know it'll probably cost more than it's worth but I think it'll look pretty sweet.I might just replace certain ones,like the ones that are easily visible.

I used polished stainless steel bolts for the bed and OUCH, triple the cost of normal bolts. but... they look goooooooooooood!

I've done that on my last two projects. Its expensive, but well worth it in my opinion.

If your gonna use stainless nuts and bolts put some never sieze on them because stainless will gall in a heartbeat. If you use stainless bolts and carbon steel nuts it doesn't happen. I don't know why that is.

I used stainless nuts and bolts when I started putting mine back together. Check out http://totallystainless.net/totally.html . They sell sets for all our trucks. You can get partial sets, or a complete kit to use. I believe some of the vendors on this board sell them also?

you can save a ton of money by purchasing unpolished stainless and polishing it yourself. It isn't difficult to do on a small scale such as bolt heads. You will need a pedestal grinder, 2-3 cotton "buffs"/wheels, and the different grades of rouge.

Check out Eastwood, or better yet to save some more money check with a local industrial supply house. They should be able to supply you with everything you need.

Unless its a grade 8 application I use stainless wherever I can. Yes, it looks awesome. Stainless is approx. Grade 5 by the way. Just an FYI.

As I stated on another thread you can save about 1/2 if your area has a specialty bolt distributor.....

GMC= Got More Class! 1970 GMC LWB, Fleetside, 350/4spd, Flowmaster "40's", 2002 GMC 16" Rallies, cowl hood,and added a bunch of options that weren't there when I started.
