On a 77 P/U; where is the turn signal flasher?
Without getting out all my 77 Info books out does anybody know off
hand where the turn signal flasher is on a 77 Chevy P/U? I assume the four way flasher is on the fuse panel underneath the left hand side of the dash panel against the firewall. Thanks in advance-Larry |

Ok; I'll look at both places. Now does anybody know the original number
flasher? On the Vettes and Camaro's of that time frame they took a Tung-Sol 224; I presume the P/U took the same; correct? Wonder if Keith would know. Thanks in advance--Larry |

Its a 552 for both or you can go with a EL12 (electronic flasher) or a LF12 ( loud) or a LL552 ( long life )

OK FWIW here is what I found out with my 77 P/U. First off the truck is in storage and hard to get to but I did manage to get the driver side door open and look at the fuse panel. It looks to be the same as "motornut's" picture. It does indeed have two "552" in it which really surprised me expecially for the turn signal flasher. I was always told that the "552" was for "hazard flashers only". What complicates the matter is when I openned my parts book and looked at group#2.892 it shows the turn signal flasher to be a "224" which would make more sense to me as that was a common two lamp system for almost all the older Chevrolet's. AFAIK my fuse panel has never been changed as truck is all original with low miles on it. The last time I ran the truck the turn signals blinked on too fast. I have both replacement flashers so next time will test them out. Any other ideas are welcomed. Thanks to all. Larry |

Re: On a 77 P/U; where is the turn signal flasher?
I run the electronic flashers in all my stuff since I use trailers so I don't get the hyperflash when I plug in.
May just be going bad or there's high resistance in some of the connections may be causing it to flash too quick I would check to see if the the 4 ways flash quick also , if not and they flash normal swap the 2 flashers and see if that fixes it. then go from there

My four ways flash normal; sounds like a good idea to just swap them to see what happens. Any idea's why the GM parts book show a "224" to be the proper turn signal flasher?? Thanks-Larry |

Re: On a 77 P/U; where is the turn signal flasher?
If your truck has a trailer harness , the flasher was most likely changed many years ago if it even had a 223 back then
here's a little thing I found on another message board I look at that was posted in 2001 about the 223 and the 552 "I actually went down to the auto store tonight and read through the Wagner flasher catalog that hangs on the light isle. I was surprised I couldn't find this information on line at the Federal-Mogul website. The 224TT is the standard flasher for the turn signals. It has the bulb outage indicator that you mentioned. It is actually made for 12v systems with 2 32candle power bulbs. The 552 is for the emergency flashers, also a thermal can, but no light out sensing. As suspected, this is so all of the flashers will work, even if burnt out it will flash the ones that work in an emergency unlike the stock can which keeps a rear bulb solid on if one is out. I personally now have the 552 can on both the turn signals and then flashers. I know it means you have to do a walk around once in a while to check for burnt out lamps, which is a good idea anyway..this way the rear turn signals will blink if a front bulb goes out. "

Thanks again for the info. AFA my truck I bought/spec. it out when I bought it brand new. The trailer harness was an option I went for (UY7). The fuse panel with the flashers where never changed so two 552 came from the factory. Thanks again--Larry |

Re: On a 77 P/U; where is the turn signal flasher?
Is there a way to add the turn signal flasher wiring to a 1978 that didn't come from the factory with it? The only flasher mine has is for the hazard lamps. The flasher position is present but there is no wiring in the fuse block (truck is 100% stock). What I'm trying to do is remedy the hyperflash I get when I use the turn signals while towing. I read about replacing the flashers with electronic versions, but what do you do when there is no flasher to replace?

In one sentence you don't have blinkers, but you do? When towing? Not sure why a truck would have none ( factory)

Re: On a 77 P/U; where is the turn signal flasher?
Pop the flasher you have out and plug it in to where the other one goes, if it works, go grab another flasher.
Common side of the road fix if blinkers went out, just pop the hazard flasher and replace the turn signal one. Saved many a ticket or an accident.

Re: On a 77 P/U; where is the turn signal flasher?
Get a mirror and flashlight and look under the dash for a can. My '76 Nova had the flasher remote mounted to a support behind the radio. And if I remember right while flipping through Hatzies parts illustation pdf, I saw a similar setup. Didn't pay any attention to if it was for vans or trucks, but it obviously made its way into things other than passenger cars.
FWIW, any original flashers I harvested from the autowreckers out of both pickups and vans was a 224. I liked them since they flashed a bit faster than the hazzard, or electronic flasher. Alex. |

With the trailer the turn signals are very fast. Comparing your fuse block to mine, I have the upper hazard flasher in place, but there is no lower turn signal flasher on the fuse block. There is not even any wiring going to the lower flasher position. I'll get under the dash and see if I can find a remote turn signal flasher anywhere. |

You can't have turn signals without a flasher. It's under there somewhere. Turn it on and listen for it.

Re: On a 77 P/U; where is the turn signal flasher?
Easy way is just hook up your trailer and turn on your signal and Listen under the dash for it . When you find the one your looking for just replace it with electronic flasher and it can handle up to 10 lamps

Re: On a 77 P/U; where is the turn signal flasher?
Okay so I found the turn signal flasher right under the dash. It is a 224 (2 lamp model) so that's why I'm having trouble with the trailer lights. I swapped the 552 (2-6 lamp model) hazard flasher with the 224 and the trailer lights work perfectly so I'll just find another 552 flasher for the turn signals.
While I was messing with it I moved the wiring for the turn signal flasher to the fuse block like motornut's original wiring because a 552 doesn't have the little "tit" to mount under the dash. A few pics for everyone: http://www.supermotors.net/registry/26771/83752 |

Re: On a 77 P/U; where is the turn signal flasher?
Are all 552 flashers created equal? Is there a regular version and a heavy duty version? I plugged in a spare 552 I had laying around, but it resulted in a quick flash as well (maybe it was bad or something). I thought all 552s could handle 6 lamps....The original heavy duty 552 hazard flasher is the only one that will operate the trailer lights correctly.

Re: On a 77 P/U; where is the turn signal flasher?
Just get a EL12 flasher and your good to go it's the electronic unit and will handle everything . I did this some time ago and no longer worry about too fast or too slow or uneven flashing with and without a trailer

Re: On a 77 P/U; where is the turn signal flasher?
Did you add some type of inline fuse when you switched to the electronic flasher? On some of the I've been looking at say they must be fused so I was curious how that may work. Would you just splice in an inline fuse holder on the positive lead?

just plugged it in no need for a fuse as the ckt already has one , its a plug and play take you longer to open the package.
