My new '52

Hey,

New member here. I just bought me what I think is a pretty nice '52 Chevy 1/2 ton. I have been looking for one of these early Chevy pickups for many years. I didn't want one that had been "modified", but instead, I wanted one as close to original as possible. There are many things that need work, but she looks good, runs strong, and fills my needs perfectly. I have already started doing some repairs on her, (fuel gauge sending unit, cowl gasket, etc....). I have been lurking on this forum for a couple of weeks now, and have already learned a lot. I will have a lot of questions, so I hope you experts will help me. This is my first, and probably last, classic truck.

Re: My new '52

Thanks for the nice comments. Yes, I thought there were some non-original items under the hood as well. I have removed the goofy horn and will get the windshield washer system soon. I assume that is what Katrina was referring to. If there is anything else, please let me know.

I have my first question: Is there any reason why a modern, multi-viscosity oil would not be safe in this old engine?

Thanks again,
daveboy

Correct me if I'm wrong but I am pretty sure that side mounted spare tire wasn't available until 53. I love those so you should keep it anyway. I got one for my 50.

Re: My new '52

Wow Dave, niceass truck Congrats on finding it. Was it local or did you have to ship it from elsewhere?

What are your plans for it? I'm no oils expert but I think the SAE grades are AT LEAST as good as the older versions. And obviously much better in some ways. I wouldn't know what viscosity to tell you to buy but it shouldn't be that hard to figure out:

Oh, P.S. Do you know if your 235 is the original, splasher type or if it was upgraded to the later full pressure oiling system?

Re: My new '52

Beautiful truck. Sometimes (most times, LOL) I wish I'd just paid the money and bought a nice truck to start with like you did.
I probably would remove that horn, but would leave the windshield washer in place unless you plan on entering it in judged shows. The washer is a safety item, like seatbelts and most people accept those on an otherwise stock restoration.

Re: My new '52

It won't be a daily driver. Mostly weekend short-distance cruising. I plan to install my gas tank sending unit today. Hopefully, that will get my gas guage working.
