Push Button 4 wheel Drive

Hey fella's I have a 2003 GMC 1500hd. It has the push button 4 wheel drive with Auto 4wd. The problem is it is stuck in 4lo. I have been having the service 4wd message coming up. Somedays when i hope in the neutral light is on, or it is in auto 4wd or other times its in 4 high or 4 lo. Did anybody else have problems like this?

Re: Push Button 4 wheel Drive

If you're stuck in 4LO, you do know you HAVE to put the shifter in N to shift out of it, correct? HAVE to. I had to bust out the owner's manual one day, I couldn't get mine out of it either, didn't know it had to be in N.

If that's not your issue... GM had a lot of problems with the solder joints in the auto switches. There is an "improved" replacement available. I installed one in my truck 4 or 5 years ago, similar symptoms that you're having.

Old Part Number 15709327
New Part Number 19168767
Part Name SWITCH
MSRP $83.13
Online Price $49.29

That's GMpartsdirect.com Their price will be + shipping. You can search on ebay too, some new ones for only $33 shipped. REALLY easy to swap out too. Turn the key on, put the gear selector down as far as it will go, then you can pop the whole cluster face off gently (check for screws, it's been a while, but I think it's all clips) then you can see the whole 4wd switch pops out.

Re: Push Button 4 wheel Drive

67 Chevy Redneck. Turned out to be the 4 wheel drive selector switch on the dash. As you said the soilder points must have went bad. I put the new switch in n hit the 2 high button n it came right out of 4 low. Thanks for the info!!!

Re: Push Button 4 wheel Drive

Awesome! I hope you got a good deal on one, some places charge $60-80 for them, I think I paid like $35 for mine.

Re: Push Button 4 wheel Drive

I had to go to the GM dealer up the road. It was 100 bucks all together. The cheapest I found was 90 bucks but it wouldnt have been here for over a week.

Re: Push Button 4 wheel Drive

I just ordered one from RockAuto.com for $55 with shipping on Wednesday evening and I should have it today. I have the same problem with my Tahoe and I hope that this is the only thing wrong. Years ago I swapped out the original one for a known good one and the problem went completely away until September last year then every once in awhile the service 4wd light would come on or the nuetral light would be lit. If it every lit up the 4lo light and we didnt notice it and started driving, it wouldnt run very well and shifting was erratic.
