power steering???
My 2wd '72 Jimmy's power steering kinda grabs & releases when I turn sharply like into a parking space. It has plenty of fluid, doesn't leak & the belt's good. It steers fine when I'm driving. Is the pump going bad? Never had one do this before. It's a 350/350auto.

I had my gear box start acting up until it completely failed. The symptoms were it would seem like it would bind slightly when making only a left hand turn into a parking spot at slow speeds. At first it was very slight. Then all at once it locked up in a hard left turn into a parking spot. I didn't investigate the gear box but suspect internal failure. Not sure but much preferred the failure the way it happen over doing a lane change at a normal speed.

Thanks Sammy, I'm happier this morning. One of my neighbors keeps coming by making lo-ball offers on the Jimmy. We were looking under the hood and I found the P.S. belt was loose .......... I get older & dumber all the time. Tightened the belt and it seem to be fine. Thought I'd checked it first thing.

Hi, i believe you have a slipping belt. A trick i learned in auto tech schooling in the 70's is this, take a bright colored crayon and strike a straight line from the center out to the edge, so it looks like a spoke on a bike wheel. Start the truck up, have someone else turn the wheel as you look at the crayon line. As it slows down it will look broken up and different. Sometimes belt slips but won't squeal. Lower rpm's will show a different pattern than a slower belt slipping. It's an optical illusion, but it always works. I used this trick many times before serpentine belt systems came out.
