292 Guys chime in
Ok so my temp light comes on after running only about 5 min. I just replaced the thermostat, put in a new water pump, and just put in a some what new three core radiator. I'm not sure where the temp sensor is on this engine? So what could be the problem?

I have a 292 in my 64 pick up and the temp sending unit is in the lower t stat housing. The wire comes from the passenger side across the front of the valve cover and plugs in. The wire should be green. If it is there, you can't miss it.

A couple of questions--
Has someone put on a fan shroud, and if so is fan A) the right size and B) in the right place, half in and half out of the shroud? It's real easy to not get things clear full anytime you do cooling system work. Is everything clear full? 292's require a by-pass hose from before the t-stat to the water pump. Is this in place? If you bought a new water pump, the parts kid may have assumed that they are the same as a 250/230. They are not, they have the extra inlet. On older ones it is about a 1.25" hose and on the newer ones it's 3/4" heater hose. I don't have a picture of this handy, but maybe someone else does. And finally, have you checked your water temp with either an actual thermometer or one of those digital infra-red types? Maybe it's not as hot as you think. Oh-one more thing-it could be that the sender is for a gauge instead of a light. I don't know how to tell the difference (if there is any) Just some ideas.

Well the light would come on before I did all that work. That work wasn't just to rule out the light though..... radiator had holes, the water pump bearing was shot horribly. It fell into pieces and so did the thermostat. So on that note I thought the light would go away. Guess I'll have to put an actual water temp gauge in.

could be the sending unit. I replaced mine on my 250. I think it is the wrong sender, When running and cold temp light is on dim and gets brighter as engine warms.
Also after I changed water pumps I had to undo the top heater hose and then fill repeat a couple of times to get all the air out. Ron

It is most likely the sending unit. It is in the therm housing on the older models & on top of the cyl head on the later models. It has a green wire going to it. They are not expensive.
