New member, serious help needed!!

Hi everyone, Been working on cars for quite a while now, first build was a 73 SS nova, during the $4.00/gallon gas prices, which led to building mannnny hondas. Hatchbacks, coupes, sedans, single cams, dual cams, N/A, Turbo etc etc.

Sold my boosted Civic coupe and got back in the V8 game with an 86 mustang, which had to go and sold off the 97 camry I've had since I was 15, and picked up an 86 short bed. So now the truck is my project/daily. Couldn't be happier!!..

Except for the fact that I blew a head gasket on my way to work this morning. I just moved to be closer to work so funds are a little tight as of late,

Which leads to my question, I figure I might as well just tear the motor apart and do a complete rebuild (Most of my gaskets leak anyways :p)

What's a good kit? Where to buy? Quick availability? Don't think I'll be replacing my pistons, probably just rings, gaskets etc. (still to be determined once I get it torn apart...)

Not trying to tear it apart, send it out to get bored and put a big ass cam or anything, just a basic rebuild.

Any info or links/ person experience with particular brands would be greatly appreciated!!

Once you have it apart, you will know the bore size, and the crank journal sizes. Summit has pretty good deals on over haul kits. Is it a 305 or 350?

It's a 350, and I figured summit was going to be my best bet, that's where I bought everything for my nova except hard to finds went to ss396.com

But that's the plan for this evening... I've gotta do a brake job and tune up for one of my neighbors, but once I get it back to the house I'll tear into it since it's friday anyways!!

If you are just looking to do a stock type rebuild for now, look at Blaine's. I have had good luck with them, and they are open tomorrow.

Re: New member, serious help needed!!

Try Northern auto parts. Last engine i built i bought their complete kit with a cam, timing set and complete gasket kit. It was much cheaper than summit but used the same parts. Speed pro pistons, Clevite bearings, Elgin cam, Felpro gaskets. All the good stuff. Their customer service was also very helpful and the shipping was pretty fast. They let you customize the kit however you want, something that Summit wont let you do.

Re: New member, serious help needed!!

for the gaskets get a KS2600. It's an engine builders kit from Fel-Pro...has everything that a full set does just 1/2 the price.

This set is coming from ATK reman, we work hand in hand with them over here, and figured 43$ for the entire kit wasn'a bad deal.
