Flywheel cover??

Hey all,

Need to find or fabricate a flywheel cover for my 50 3/4 ton to pass license inspection but not sure if I will be able to source one or if I will have to make one up.

I have a 307 engine mated to the stock 4 speed floor transmission.

Has any one got any ideas and or pics of one that might fit, I could adapt or as a last resort fabricate?

What exactly do they mean by flywheel cover?
Is it the cover that goes on the bottom of the bell housing or a guard incase of clutch failure?

It is going to depend on what bellhousing you used.do you have a picture of what you have.Mine from my 57 has the lower cover and a sheet metal piece that ataches between rear of oil pan and front side of bellhousing with hole cut out for starter nose. I can take picture of these if you need.

Its the cover that goes on the bottom of the bell housing.

It will be something like one of the ones in your link for sure Starterman just not sure which one i would need.

I'll take a photo and post a pic to see if someone might be able to ID a cover I could use.

Be easy if it was a SBC to a T350 or 40 etc. Plenty of covers listed for that type of combo. Just not sure on SBC to stock 4 speed.

Thanks mate. I guess it's a matter of getting underneath, take a pic and then try and match up a cover that looks like it will suit.

The number on my engine says its a 69-72 (roughly and just from memory) 307.

Does this help pick one or will it depend on other factors?

you are welcome dodger. If it is the one with the open bottom I think all the "truck" open bottoms use the same pan and front cover I have two different ones and the pan bolts look to be the same pattern GM used to be pretty good in that respect.

The interesting thing is with all those bell housings the bolt patterns are mostly the same. there are other differences though.

Have been chasing down a cover on and off today but only over the phone.

Everyone I speak to gets all worried when I tell them it's a 307 mated to the original 4 speed box and that I need a cover to suit.

Have sent this pic to a couple of the shops to see if they have something that will fit md I'm just waiting on a response.

Thought I'd post it here as well to see if anyone knows what will go on from experience.

Looks like your PO engine swapper made a crossmember under the bellhousing. I think you will have to fab something for that.

I would venture to guess the 55 to 62 cover.

I agree with Mkittle, that one would be a good starting point, you would need to add some mounting clips for the modified crossmember but a couple of Tex fasteners would work for the install. It looks like it comes without the back cornerholes, but easy to fix. Worst case you have the rounded part and only have to deal with the flats.

Well it would seem that with the transmission cross member that a PO installed, nothing I could find would fit. Not even anything that I could adapt easily.

So, got a sheet of aluminium and despite my lack of fabricating skills, I put a cover together. Pretty rough but it does what it's meant to do which is cover the fly wheel.

Only two things to mark off the list before I take it back for re inspection and licensing. King pins and stamp engine number. Fingers crossed!

Looks good to me. I would ad a small drain hole so you can keep track of any internal fluid leaks and drain residual moisture that might cause problems.

Cheers OrrieG. It has a drain hole, just my crap photo. Right on the centre of the pan section at the lowest point there.

I wouldn't want to make him feel inferior in the presence of experts. That is a sure way to get a "fail" as his power is not to be undermined. You know the type.

if he did read this forum you probably wouldn't be having the problems you are having on trivial things that don't really do anything.
