Tailgate dent
I got a different tailgate and thought alright a good tailgate. Well when I took the trim off there was a big dent running almost the whole length of the tailgate. I tried to pull it out with my stud puller but it won't even budge. Does anyone have any ideas other than buying a new tailgate?

Re: Tailgate dent
Well pictures would be a great start to delineate the size and depth of the dent along with its specific location.

Re: Tailgate dent
Something along these lines would work the best, for big dents.

Re: Tailgate dent
Wow... all I can say about the 67-72 tailgates is... I wish the General still made them as tuff as these are. The late model truck tailgates are a joke.

Re: Tailgate dent
Holy Smoke!!!! Thats gonna be a heavy pull. If the lettering isn't important to you I would cut out the panel and relace it with some heavy gauge sheet.

Re: Tailgate dent
The lettering isn't super important I've got the trim piece that covers it just need the lettering I just know I could hide it but will always know its there If I don't fix it. And the trim doesn't look right now that I noticed it

Re: Tailgate dent
Very repairable but do you have the tools and skill to do it?
If not just buy another gate. It would cost to much to pay for the repair. |

Re: Tailgate dent
Are the "new" tailgates that brothers, and lmc. Sell as good as the originals? Or would a replacement skin be better for a dented gate?

Everyone has his/her own take on how to deal with stuff. Like, I could understand being bothered by something that's screwed up and not fixed if it were, say, rust. Or a dead rat in the a/c duct. But a dent covered by the trim? Very through. And I mean that in a GOOD way. Then I read that after you noticed it, it doesn't look right. Ahhhhhh! Got ya. Re: Tailgate dent
I'm going to paint the truck and if I'm going through all that trouble to paint it might as well be happy with it hidden or not

Re: Tailgate dent
Thanks (turp mcspray). We didn't use quite what you had pictured but I would have been trying for a long time to get that out. My buddy and I ended up welding pull tabs on and using his jeeps wench to pull it out. Still need to do some finishing work but its far closer than I was at yesterday.

Re: Tailgate dent
Wow, that turned out pretty good - especially given the fact you had to use a winch to pull the dent out !

Re: Tailgate dent
Same basic method that I was showing, just a different tool to pull with.

Re: Tailgate dent
Great job!! I hope you read my trim suggestion as a joke, hence the wink behind it. Your work looks very nice, definitely something to be proud of.

Re: Tailgate dent
Sorry I didn't get back sooner, but it looks like you have made great progress!
At this point the only recommendations I can add are to normalize the worked area with a torch. If you still have low spots try and shrink them out by localized heating and quenching.
