Is there anyway to 100 percent sure. I ran the numbers on my block it says 283 out of a 1965 Chevy. My truck is a 1965 C10 any help would be appreciated thanks.

Re: I think my truck might be a numbers matching

There should be a pad on the pass. side front of the block, right where the head meets the block. Typically there would be a stamped number there and part of this number would match part of the VIN number (like the last part). If these match up, this would be a numbers matching otherwise it would be date code match.

Re: I think my truck might be a numbers matching

The top drivers side of the frame near the motor mount has a number stamped on it that should also match the vin on the cab.

Re: I think my truck might be a numbers matching

So your frame matches your cab vin. That's good!
Should be more numbers on the front pad. to be a match.
Do you have a powerglide tranny?

Re: I think my truck might be a numbers matching

THe suffix code GF says it should be a powerglide. Originally. Probably swapped.
You need the 146996 on the pad for the match to your vin.

Re: I think my truck might be a numbers matching

I could be wrong but i dont think they numbers matched our years in trucks!you can only date match it.if you have buildsheet or spid you can prove that it came out of the box with a 283!also another matching serial number on the top of frame under cab!cheers

Re: I think my truck might be a numbers matching

They weren't as diligent about numbers down here as they were up there Ron. They did not stamp vin numbers on 283's so your truck will only have the code.

Re: I think my truck might be a numbers matching

I really don't know what it had orig for an eng. it had that 4 cyl in it when I got it. it would be neat though if one had the orig eng and if it did have that nbr stamped in it. the early chevs had then that way as my 32 chev tag was also the same way and did have the corresponding nbr stamped on the eng. the all had that at one time, don't know when they stopped it. mind you they never had the production nbrs up here that were down there.
but that would have been a true nbrs matching

Without the build sheet it is impossible to know, that's why documentation is everything.

You could check the casting date. It should end in a 5. Here's a link to check it.

I just decoded the number on the front of the head.
F0309GF
F = Flint
03= March
09= the 9th
GF= 1965 with a 283 power glide

I'm not sure what tranny I have. I assumed it was a turbo 350. I guess I will pull the numbers and look it up. Things are looking better and better.

It feels like it shifts 3 times. I just usually put it in D and drive away.

Re: I think my truck might be a numbers matching

You still need to check the casting date and the block casting number.
If it's a powerglide it should have a rod for the kickdown like in the first pic in this link.
A turbo 350 uses a cable.
Here's a link to determine what tranny you have.

Re: I think my truck might be a numbers matching

How did you decode that motor because I have a 65 C10 with a 283 powerglide and it codes as a WE which in my manual is exactly right. I don't even see a GF anywhere in the factory manual for numbers.

Your we looks like a 283 with a m/t which I'm guessing means manual transmission.
