4 spd to 5 spd manual

So I wanna take out the old tired 4 spd out and put in a 5 spd. Any one done that? I'm sure some one has. I don't know much about GM trannys so I'm not sure what to go look for as far as a 5 spd?

Don't remember you having driven that truck enough to declare the tranny tired. They are pretty durable and rebuildable. But it is a granny first without an overdrive. There are various options open to you. It will depend on intended use, what engine, financial considerations and your abilities. Some are easier than others and money spent has a lot to do with how easy and clean a change can be made. There is a case for doing a T-5 swap if you stay with your current engine or similar mild output. Stepping up to a NV3500 or better a NV4500 would be a better choice with most engines. With these come the decisions and expenses of addressing the clutch housing and type of clutch actuation. Need to sit down and do a search for some of the specifics involved.

I haven't driven it enough but my uncle did hauling coal most of its life. But its got a 292 I6 and some time down the road I'll hook up some big power so why not find somethin that I won't have to change then. But then again I'm just dreaming.

The 292 is a great motor I'm told, even in stock form. If you want big power you should read up on some of the turbocharged I6's and offenhauser stuff to put on them. You'd be surprised what the 292 can handle and produce with more modern mods.

For the trans, you could look into one of the '80's new process 4spd overdrive units.

O I've done my homework on my motor. Look up Leo Stantucci Very smart man and what a motor he has built. I have his book and it has every possible way to get major HP out of those motors. For now I'm sticking with the el stocko lol.

Awwww ok so then swapping a tranny looks like it sucks a lot. I'm no expert mechanic. So maybe would it be just as easy to change my rear end so I have some better freeway speed?

Now if you could dig up a used Ranger O/D from Advance Adapters and didn't go with too much engine or side stepping the clutch....
