Drop axle woes

My 53 project came with a new 3" drop axle made by premier streetrods and sold by speedway as well. Now that I'm ready to get this thing to roller status, I find the axle is really for a 55-59 truck.
Should I try to shorten it by removing a section in the middle, drill for plug welds and add a piece of solid round stock to the inside diameter?
This is supposed to be a budget build but the fact that they make one for my year truck leaves me scratching my head. Why didn't they just buy the correct one for it?

Re: Drop axle woes

ooo~ I don't know about this kind of stuff. but I do know there is nothing "budget" about these trucks! I wonder if your 3" drop would look ok on my truck~ I'm kind of not terribly pleased with the stance on the front end of truck. Darned regrets! However, how did the axle even fit if it wasn't meant for your truck?

Hey, Welcome to this great site!! Surely someone will help you figure it out!

Re: Drop axle woes

Absolutely do NOT cut this axle in half. I can't think of a potentially more catastrophic failure than to have your axle break in half at speed.

If it's not right for your truck, list it for sale on Craigslist. I'd buy it if you were in SoCal.
