Cheap hoist:anyone have experience with these?

I got the following hoist from harbor freight based on the reviews. Usually not a fan of cheap junk from China but this had great reviews. I talked with my buddy who is an architect and his partner who is an engineer (good to know people).

I won't trust it to the 880 rating but I will use it for pulling the cab off my donor truck, bed when I do the wood, engine etc.

Architect buddy recommended not leaving anything hanging for too long (months) as it is "Live weight at a single point" and can stress the beams I am using for support over time.

Overall very excited to get it up and try it out though.

Anyone here use a similar hoist or this exact one?

I have a (h.f.) "shop crane" (non folding) I use it in my small engine repair shop for lifting riding mowers, mower decks, NO PROBLEMS!!. (so far) just "top off" the cylinder with fluid after a few uses,...good luck.

No experience, but I did go look at them a few weeks ago. I decided to go w/steel I-beam instead and a sliding hoist

used one for year's as well as my buddy's have the same one and none of us has ever has an issue with it.

This is what I used to remove my cab with but I built mine out of metal. They work good.

Has anyone tried bolting chains on the inside of the cab where the cab usually bolts to the frame and then attaching the chins to the hook on the hoist? The arm of the hoist would still be inside the cab and the chains would be connected to a strong mounting point.

Are you asking about engine hoists (cherry pickers), or electric winch/hoist types like that in the link you posted?

I've used HF engine hoists a number of times to great success, worth every penny of the $200 some dollars that the heavy one they sell costs. As for the electric hoists; their cheap winch motors are actually decent, so I'd think the hoists would be the same. As long as the hoist has a way to lock in place your fine. I have seen some uber-cheapies that do NOT hold weight without power. Those can be dangerous.

Just remember if you think it is too heave get a snatch block, it cuts the load by 1/2 and just slows it down .......that way you will not overload it. Kieth

I talked to my buddy who has a shop and he is looking at using this hoist on an ibeam. HB has that too I guess?

Thanks guys for all the input. I dig the lift you used Budman. I am using similar made dolly that I made out of 4x4 trailer to roll the cab on once off the truck too.

I used the electric hoist in post #1 to pull the 250 out of my boat with good results. Have the folding crane too. Definitely worth the money
