Sun Visors, Spats...... do we add them to 60-66's ?
Was wondering, as I have never seen a truck from this era that has a visor.
Are there any pics of them fitted, or has anyone considered it ? Please comment or add pics from your stashes. Then my next question is easier to answer, as I have seen pics of two or three C10 Fleetsides with spats. I think they were all Long Fleets, but has anyone got them on, or have pics on a Short Fleet? Please tell me more about where to find them, how to fit them. Please post up.

Personal opinion here, but I think that both visors and skirts are suited to 50s and earlier vehicles.

"spats" love the terminology. Never heard that one, we call 'em fender skirts! You need to translate for us sometimes (we talked about this before) for instance: your Hood = our roof, your Bonnet = our hood there must be lots of these.

Re: Sun Visors, Spats...... do we add them to 60-66's ?
The short answer – a few independent thinkers still like them on our trucks but they were generally passé by the time our trucks came along.
Add on accessories really hit their peak right after World War II. And the primary reason was not due to popular demand; it was the result of greed and price gouging. Citizens had been unable to obtain new cars for at least 4 years, and the government stepped in and set profit margins on the automakers to prevent price gouging. So the dealers who had been hanging on by a thread during the war years did an end run and slapped every accessory imaginable on new cars and forced buyers to pay outrageous prices for these trinkets. If they wouldn't pay up, they lost their place on the waiting list and the car would be sold to the next person in line. That’s why the most accessorized original cars are primarily from the late 40’s and early 50’s. By the late 50’s and early 60’s the general shape and style of mainstream cars didn’t look anything like the earlier shapes, and many of the accessories like visors and spotlights never appeared on late model cars when they were new. Some elders thought skirts looked rich on their big Buicks or Lincolns, but younger people were interested in sporty cars, so new installations disappeared almost overnight. I’ve never been so hot on visors, mainly because I grew up in cars that had them and more than once witnessed an owner pull over, rip the visor off and toss it into a canyon (my dad included). Years later I discovered my father in law had done the same thing, for the same reason – the visor had a tendency to flutter, rattle, and obscure vision. The ripping and tossing generally happened just after some life threatening incident which involved the poor vision offered by the visor.

Re: Sun Visors, Spats...... do we add them to 60-66's ?
Many great responses and replies. Thank you all.
I do tend to forget about the language barrier here. Tyres and Tires Colour and Color (and Kolor) And then Text speak creeps in as well. I really am pleased about the "history lesson" as many of the origens of actions, sayings etc is often lost over time. The bottom line is the last bit about safety. I recently sat in a 48 with a visor and found my vision impaired. So it looks great, but works badly. Fender skirts or Spats to me are OK on some and not others, I prefer them on more traditional looking cars. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Sun Visors, Spats...... do we add them to 60-66's ?
I saw a pic of a red '60-61 Suburban with a sun visor... the truck was lowered, but not slammed... the big hood and the visor made the thing look a lot longer and a lot lower. It was a good look on that Suburban.
Not sure it would work as well on a pick-up truck cab... I think the proportions would get thrown off. -Brad

Re: Sun Visors, Spats...... do we add them to 60-66's ?
Hi,
I have a Ford Cortina like the one in the fourth picture. I have not the wheel spats (fender skirts) but I would like to have them. I have found a company in Australia who makes them, but it is very expensive to ship them to Europe. Does anybody know any other company of place to get them? Richard |

Heres a crew cab with a sunvisor...nice truck, but I don't think they look right on this body style.
I do think the fender skirts look good on certain trucks.

Hey rich, a driver side carrier will work on the passenger side if you reverse the mounts.
