If your pitman arm is hitting the lower A arm, you definitely have something out of wack. What steering linkage are you using? The '87 or the '64? I always recommend using the entire later model steering linkage. You will have to locate and drill new holes for the later model idler arm, but this simplifies the steering linkage issue. Plus that way, when you need to replace a part of it, there is no guessing what application you need to ask for.

Here is my favorite thread on a front disc brake conversion:

There are a few others located in the '60-'66 FAQ index at the top of the main page.

Im using the steering linkage, crossmember,a arms, steering gear box from the 87. I have the conversion plates for the PS gear box and if I put the 87 pit arm on it the end hits the lower a arm. Dont know where to go from here.

Does any one know if a pit arm off a van or an S10 would fit the PS gear box and fix the lenght issue?

Re: Need help on Front end swap

Do you have any pics of where it's hitting? I just helped my buddy install all the steering components from an 87 onto his 66. No issues. Like Captain said above, we just had to drill new holes for the idler arm. I'm wondering if maybe the steering box is mounted too low or something?

Yeah seems really odd. My 87 crossmember on my 62 frame has no issuses. My center link is close to the crossmember during the turning stroke but no where neqr touching at the pitman arm. I am using the stock 62 box and pitman though.

Re: Need help on Front end swap

If your '87 truck pitman arm is hitting the lower control arm, your steering box is not located correctly. A pitman arm from a Van or S10 will not work. I have always used a '73-'87 steering box and pitman arm, and never had an interference issue if the box is located correctly.
