Go over to Stovebolts.com, there is a tech article on converting a later model 6 hei, just a little grinding on the shaft.

I've heard good and bad about pertronix, the bad mostly being failures. That said, I've had three over the years and am currently running them in my bronco and '55 3100 and have never had an issue. Basically a 20 minute install and aside from an extra wire it still maintains a stock appearance.

Re: 216, 235, 261 distributer- Conversion or HEI
both will get rid of the points, pertronics will look stock, hei is a little bulky looking imo.
i would base your preference on price and work involved, because i think their value is equal when your looking at pertronix you don't need the new and improved version, ignitor II or the original ignitor work fine. my son has had pertronix ignitor in his 68 elco for 14 yrs with no prolems

Re: 216, 235, 261 distributer- Conversion or HEI
I have had success with both in multiple projects. The last 2 have gotten HEI. The 55 wagon 235 used Tom Langdon's mini HEI and the Burb has a large bulky conventional HEI with 10mm wires. I live in the rainy NW and notice a difference in wet weather cold starts and overall run ability with a bulletproof ignition system. Drier or hotter climates may not notice a difference. Langdon's mini looks cool as it replicates the stock look, but you pay a little more for the looks. An aftermarket one is a little bulkier but less expensive.

Re: 216, 235, 261 distributer- Conversion or HEI
New guy here so I'm not sure if it's Kosher or not to post links to other forums but I did a write-up on the HAMB and ChevyTalk on the exact same topic a little while ago:
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/s...&highlight=hei http://www.chevytalk.org/fusionbb/sh.../fromsearch/1/ Here's a PDF that may be easier to print out: https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B29...RnVsOXQ4V000UQ One thing that came up after the conversion was the material of the distributor gear, either forged or cast steel. You need to make sure it matches the camshaft or you may have issues, I'm told. |
