going from a 5 lug to 6?

Ok guys, I have a 71 C10 with the original 5 lug pattern. I'm looking to go to a 6 lug set up cause I have a set of wheels already for my project. Is there anyway I can convert mine to a 6 lug or am I better off buying a rolling frame off of a 68? Is it possible to swap out the axles for 6 lug pattern?

Most people swap the other direction, so I would bet you could find parts from somebody here who has done the 6-to-5 swap for the rear.

Front is more difficult, you would probably need to buy the spindles for a 6-lug disk conversion as the 6-lug fronts are drums.

Do you currently have 5 lug disc brakes? If yes, then you can get a 6 lug rotor. I forget the company but someone will chime in.

The rear should be as simple as an axle swap. 1970 is the last yr for 6 lug. There are also comanys that make 6 lug axles for your rear end. I am not sure if a 71/72 4x4 rear axle will work for you but they are 6 lug. I think all the rear brake and hardware is basically the same with the execption of the drums.

I don't know all the specifics on this but I will say that you do not need to swap the entire frame to get what you want.

There's a guy here local to me who has a rolling frame from a 68 c10 who said he'd be willing to swap for my rolling frame. I had planned on buying a 4 wheel disk brake setup either way. Just looking for the best cost effective rout....

My truck is front disk brakes, if I could just swap the hub and rotor that would be Awsome. I would just have to buy axles or find a diff

Probably the best thing to do at this point considering your plan is to call Wilwood and have them give you a break down of everything involved to convert a 4 wheel drum 6 lug set up to a 4 wheel disc set up with 6 lug.

Those guys are pretty smart there and they will be willing to help you.

i was gunna say its usually the opposite.
im not saying i opose the option but you will spend 3x as much.
if you get an older chassis you still have to convert it to disc
the wheels you have will need the center bored out to fit the older style hubs
and you will just get that much more frustrated
but....
you should be able to switch out axles for the rear, as for the front they have all the same suspension so i would hit up the junk yard and find some 6 lug spindles

there was drum until 70, 71 was the first year of disc on the front so look around that time for 6 lug disc otherwise if you go to drum you will have alot of people on your back about saftey like they do to me lol

I tried my wheels on my sister's 68 and she has the 6lug pattern with disk brake conversion up front. Wheels bolted up perfectly and lined up perfect with the fenders. The wheels where ment for a 99-06 Silverado. They are 20x10 billet specialities with a 5" back spacing I believe.

Seeing that your truck is already disc equipped. Just get aftermarket 6 lug rotors and 6 lug rear axles.

That would be cheaper, who can I get axles the axles from or can I send mine to get modified.

Moser is a good axle company. Theirs are $260 a pair. I have not priced 6 lug rotors but the are aftermarket only. There are no OE swap rotors. I would be concerned that you will end up spending over $500 real quick just to make the wheels fit when you may be better off to sell what you have and buy wheels that fit the 5x5.

I'm sorta looking do do the same with my 68 though I have the 85 model year spindle swap with 1 inch rotors. I like the look of the six lug rally wheel with the larger and fewer slots. Is anyone aware of a 6 lug rotor to replace mine? I've been searching and come up short

Exactly. The rotors on your truck are the rotors used as "cores" for the 6 lug aftermarket kit. Just buy new 6 lug rotors, 1.25" thick and they will bolt right on to your existing disc brakes. You can not redrill your rotors to 6 lug though, this must be done at the manufactuer on newly made rotors. The axles can be re-drilled or buy new ones of the correct length and spline.

Ok, I just talked to a reputable company and I'm going to go ahead an order the complete brake system overhaul. I'm getting everything in a 6 lug bolt pattern. I'm going to order the axles once my frame has been refinished. Maybe I'll get lucky and find some off a 70. What would my 5 lug front disks be worth?

Parts I'm ordering:

2.5" drop spindles
Complete front brake system with cross drilled rotors
Complete rear brake system with criss drilled rotors and parking brake cables
Bracket, booster, master cylinder, disk/disk valve
Complete prebent stainless steel brake lines
