Breaking Studs

I have a 1968 chevy C-10. It has the deep rally wheels. I,m always braking the front studs.
Now I've been replacing these studs with the dorman studs at Auto Zone.
But do they make stronger studs than that. Like racing studs or something?

You didn't say whether you still have the stock drums or upgraded to disc.

All the listed spec below were from either NapaOnline.com or SummitRacing.com

You could upgrade to the ARP 7/16"-20 with a slightly bigger 0.486 in. knurl (stock knurl is .472" - ???)

You could go to a slightly bigger 1/2-20 in in either stock or ARP but you will have to drill the stud holes out bigger.

Since the newer 12mm studs are so close to the 1/2" studs I wouldn't bother going to them personally. But you could go to the bigger 14mm studs.

Curious, do you torque your lug nuts with a torque wrench or just tighten them down? I'd be looking into why they are breaking in the first place.

Hello 66, John here. Thanks for the imformation.
I have the stock hubs with the standered 7/16" and the 6 holes. Now these stock hubs are made with a round part sticking out about 3/8" or so. The center hole that are in the stock wheels fits around this round part in the hub.
The center hole in the rally wheels is bigger than this round part in the hub. So instead of th wheel resting on the hub. The wheel is resting on the studs.
Do you think perhaps this is an issue?
And if I have thought about the 1/2 studs.
And what do you mean by arp?

Some wheel are stud centric and others are hub centric. I suspect that its your wheels not being hub centric meaning the center hole in the wheel does not rests on the hub.

I've seen many trucks run the lug centric setup without breaking studs but it is possibly a factor. If you under torque them or over torque them it could cause them to break also.

You can also buy hub centering rings that slip into the wheels and take up the space between the hub and the wheel.

ARP = Automotive Racing Products http://www.arp-bolts.com/

Available from Summit Racing and most speed shop everywhere.

They are the standard to which other brands of bolts are measured. VERY high quality and race proven. Most of the pro race teams use ARP where strength and dependability are a concern.
