Engine Numbers

I believe this to be a 327 going off the numbers and websites I normally look into for engine codes but I'm not that experienced in this.

Engine # near bellhousing on driver's side - 3858180

# stamped on pad in front of passenger side head - TO4I2HC

Block has draft tube, side motor mount bosses canister type oil filter.

Anyone see anything different? How could I make sure?

Re: Engine Numbers

If it has the 461 or 462 casting heads, that should be a 300 hp 327. I'm going off past personal experience.

This is off of an engine I'm considering buying and it does not come with any heads.

Re: Engine Numbers

The HC suffix indicates that it's a 327 that came from a 67 or 68 passenger car with a powerglide transmission and was rated at 275 horsepower.

Re: Engine Numbers

The "180" casting number was only used in 1965 and 1966 all model Corvette Impala Chevelles in 250 275 300 365 375 Horse power. But your "HC" code was used for 1965 1966 1967 1968 in Impalas with 4 barrel Powerglide 250 HP. 67 and 68 used completely different casting numbers. So look for a date on the block, could be a later 1964 to 1966 casting date for the 1965 or 1966 production year.

Re: Engine Numbers

Chevrolet by the numbers doesn't show a HC suffix being used in 65 or 66. I guess it all depends on how you interpret what you read.

Hi Rossboss, my printing shows it on page 40 of Chevrolet by the numbers. Now, for 1966 that book shows HCH which the only difference is a Holley 4 barrel and that's the reason for the H after the HC. So I looked in my Chevrolet GM Parts book and it shows just HC for 1966. Then on page 62 is the 180 casting number. My Picture below 4and5 are HC from 1966 Chevrolet parts book, they are on two different pages of the GM parts book. Was not trying to prove anyone wrong, just trying to ID his 180 casting number and HC as being earlier. Jon

I really appreciate everyone providing help in identifying this block. Unfortunately, the owner has not contacted me back in order to arrange for purchase so either it has already sold or something else has come up.

#2
How could I obtain one of those books. They seem to be invaluable when identifying GM engines, heads, etc.

My father had tons of those MOTOR books and GM 'bibles' but sadly, they all 'dissapeared' after he passed away while I was overseas.

Don't give up, CALL him again, if you really want it stay on top of it.

Chevrolet by the numbers here: Chevrolet by the Numbers 1965-69: The Essential... Chevrolet by the Numbers 1965-69: The Essential...
If you search long enough you might find it cheaper. For blocks and heads though it really only covers cars and anything else that was the same as trucks. It does not cover any truck specific info or truck suffix codes.Trucks use different heads and some other parts and for that you need GM parts books for trucks, they have rear end, tranny and block numbers plus a lot of other good info. Those you find on Ebay. Try and find a print date of 1970-1975 . I have one 1983 print date that's missing info on engines for our generation of trucks that's in my 1970 and 75 print books.

Re: Engine Numbers

when did they stop the road draft tube? the block casting changed then, didn't it? I thought by 65? maybe cars and trucks were different.

didn't 65 -up use a spin on filter? (I suppose that could have been changed from a spin on, but who would go back to a canister, instead?)

67s still have the hole in the back of the block for the vent and also have canister filters. 67 was the blocks last year for small journal cranks. All of these items changed in 68. 68 is the introduction to the 350 even though a few were made for 67 Camaros .
