Broken upper shock mount

my drivers rear upper shock mount stud has the threads broken off.

I noticed a small hole in the mounting bracket that is towards the back of the truck. I opened that hole up and stuck a new stud in. Problem is my shock wont compress enough to go there and its just offline enough to put the shock in a slight bind so I dont like it.

Im thinking Im going to use a cutoff wheel and cut that old mount completely off at the bracket and then drill a new hole there. The OE mount is welded on.

If I cut it off semi-flush to the bracket do You think there will be enough meat to drill a hold for a replacement stud?

first pic you can see the old broken stud and my new one. new one makes the geometry just off a bit.

Second pic you can see the "spare" hole.

any idea what that hole is actually for?

Re: Broken upper shock mount

I cut mine off at the shoulder and drilled straight thru it ,installed a grade 8 bolt from the back...don't remember if I welded it also...have to look...the bed was off so it wasn't so bad

Re: Broken upper shock mount

hah. of course theres already a couple threads on this.
Thats exactly what Im going to do. My big problem is the bed is on so its going to take some sparks in the eyes to get that stud cut off.

Im pretty sure that mounting bracket the stud goes in is riveted in so no way I can get it off with the bed on.

thanks guys. this is exactly what I was looking for.
