8.5" rear spider gears problem.1982

1982 c10 shortbed 1/2 ton. 8.5" rear 10 bolt

the spider gears were falling apart so i ordered a new kit including both spider and side gears with thrust washers new center pin and bolt.

after new wheel bearings and seals, i got the center section together and back up in, but after installing the C clips and pulling the axels as far out as possible, the axels are now sticking out both just a TINY little hair too much for the pin to slide through the middle.ive done everything it wont go in no matter what.this is the only problem im having.

do i shave down the ends of the axels just a hair or what?

and by the way these new gears have 1 extra tooth on the spider gears (11 instead of 10) and the side gears have one LESS i guess to make up.sound right? all seems to go in and wnana work fine expect for shaft

If you shave the axles that will make the groove holding your c clips in weaker. Sounds like the spiders are not correct.

Re: 8.5" rear spider gears problem.1982

The gears are the same as far as size like height width etc etc. J am thinking it may be due to a difference in thickness on the old to new thrust washers.I will see tomorrow.shaving will be the absolute last if at all an option.I would rather find wha is really causing bit.
But, would that little hair bit really cause that big of a strength difference for the c clip? I'm talking a hair on each axle as in if I rub medium grid sand paper on the ends like 5-8 strokes it'll fit .
Don't get me wring though, if it came down to that, and it would weaken any aspect of the axle I will not do it.

Re: 8.5" rear spider gears problem.1982

Well I found out what it was.I didn't notice the old side gear thrust washer was still in there.doh! All is fine now. I guess we all make dummy mistakes!

And for the extra tooth, its a new side gear and spider gear set.the spider gear had one more tooth and the side gear had one less.strange I know.all works perfectly well.
