fibreglass and carbon fibre body panels

ive heard you can get fibreglass and carbon fibre body panels for squares but i havent been able to find any on the web other than hoods, anyone know where you can get these if at all possible and what is the quality like ? are they show worthy or are they just "monster truck panels" (flimsy and look good from 20ft)

Re: fibreglass and carbon fibre body panels

Most fiberglass body parts i ever seen was race grade which is thin flimsy and don't even look right unless your far away.I haven't see anything carbon fiber yet but most of it you see on imports is really just fiberglass with a thin layer of carbon fiber over it.A true carbon fiber fender or hood would be 2 or 3 grand easy.

You will have a hard time finding anything like that for the square body. Maybe carid.com but I doubt it.

Re: fibreglass and carbon fibre body panels

You can still find lots of good rust free body parts for squares out here in the desert southwest, so I would go that way if I were you. Whole trucks without engines and transmissions are like $500, with many good body parts.

Re: fibreglass and carbon fibre body panels

Im not aware of any carbon fibre parts for the squares yet, but I know carbonkustoms is currently in the process of fabricating carbon body parts for the 67-72 body style trucks. Not a big enough market for it...hopefully with the pro-touring movement evolving like it is in the truck scene- stronger/light-weight parts will become more readily available.

Was it the race weight hood or factory fit style?

Re: fibreglass and carbon fibre body panels

It was a factory fit hood but it was way off.The cowl part had a sag in the middle of it,The left edge of the hood wasn't even straight it had a wave in it.

Re: fibreglass and carbon fibre body panels

About 15 years ago or so ,TRUCKIN' MAGAZINE did a build up of a chevy short bed 4X4 using US BODY SOURCES TILT FRONT END, CAB, DOORS & BED. They put all the guts for the doors into it for working windows and reinforced the cab for mounting the column, pedals & brake booster. When all was done I believe they said they had shaved close to 1000 to 1200 pounds off the truck. And still all streetable.

I wouldn't trust a fiberglass cab and doors on the street with out a full cage.
