muffler question

just put my exhaust on my 402, 2 1/4 inch piped dueled with flowmaster 40's (my dad bought them without me knowing)
they exit right in front of the rear tire but they had to put the muffler real far back. but my problem is that it is really quiet, but my dad said that was because it was so far back. is that true? if so what other muffler would you get to have a deep loud rumble sound?
also its running close to 400 hp and 10:1 compression if that helps

Re: muffler question

I have some expereince working at a muffler shop about 25 years ago and I do not or will I ever believe that muffler position has anything to do with noise level. Does your truck have headers or exhaust maniflods? Typically headers produce a little more noise. What configuration is your truck? Is is long bed 2 wd / short bed 4wd, etc?

The mufflers really only fit good in the factory position which is just behind the cab. My advise would have been to use 2 1/2 inch pipe and point the tail pipes toward the ground for some extra noise. If that is not enough, you can just run a straight pipe were the mufflers were, that will get a lot of attention and make a lot of noise too.

Re: muffler question

I have headers in mine with flow master 40's in a true dual setup and its LOUD. I need ear plugs on the highway. 94db inside the cab with the windows up. I can't imagine anyone wanting their exhaust louder than that. If your exhaust is too quiet then change the mufflers or use resonators instead of mufflers. Shouldnt be hard to get a small block Chevy to blast your ear drums if you want it to.

Re: muffler question

I have a pair of 40s in my shortbed, they're almost to the rear axle and they are loud. Are you sure yours are 40s? I can't see your pipes to the muffs being to much further back than mine are, specially if they exit in front of your tires, mine exit behind. I have stainless tips on mine, they're 3" in diameter and I think they make it a little louder.

Re: muffler question

Mine: 2WD Blazer with 2004 5.3 with factory exhaust manifolds- 40 Flowmaster with 2 1/2" Head pipes and 2 1/4" Tailpipes. Mufflers in the correct location. Sounds great and not too loud and no resonance. Tailpipes are out under rear bumper. I'm not running the top on the Blazer, that may make a difference, but Im not planning on runnin' with a roof

I agree... I have 40's on my '72 GMC and it is a loud mo-fo. Loud enough to set car alarms off in parking lots. I have a lot of buds that are running 40's as well... they are not quiet.

Re: muffler question

I had FM 40's dumping at axle on my 79 malibu w/383 and it was too loud. I have never heard complaint that 40's were too quiet. The 383 recently self destructed and i installed a milder 355.. I am also swapping the 40's for Sonic Turbos and tail pipes.

Yeah lol they do, especially going down the highway at 65, been trying to find a Lil more mellow exhaust. When I was first driving I wanted it stupid loud, have it like that when you start driving and it got old fairly quick

Re: muffler question

I've got the biggest quietest mufflers I could find. 2.5 in 2.5 out. Free flowing, and I can talk to my passenger on the highway without shouting. Your Dad is wise. The noise gets old real quick. Put some cutouts on it, and you can be real loud when you wish.

Re: muffler question

Get underneath the truck and look at the numbers on the muffler and check it out online. It will tell you if they are 40's or maybe something quieter like 50's...

My exhaust is 3" and dumps out in front of the rear tires at an angle.

Re: muffler question

well first off flows are the worst flowing muffer out there next to stock, second 2 1/4 pipe is too small for any performance small block, you need tom dynomax ultraflows, hooker areo chamber, or magnaflows , hell even the cheapo summit turbo mufflers outflow flow crappers.

I agree. Mine sets off car alarms when I just idle through a parking lot with my foot off the gas.

Re: muffler question

I've got 40's that sit just about under my seat, headers and 2 1/2 inch pipe. Exit is out the side in front of the rear tire. 3" resonating tips and they are loud but meaty, just like I wanted. Most would think (and be right) that they were too loud if a daily driver, but for a weekend driver they work great. Does yours have any type of chrome tips? That seems to make a big difference.
