Smoke from one side of exhaust

I have true dual exhaust on this 1987 chevrolet truck. The drivers side tailpipe smokes. Any ideas on how i would stop it? If you give me an answer like 'check this' could you also explain on how to 'check' what. You are talking about. Thanks! Any info is greatly appreciated!

Re: Smoke from one side of exhaust

Could Be:

Bad valve stem seals on that bank
Broke ring on that bank
Clogged oil return on that bank

I would not worry until it fouls a plug or consumes more than one quart every 3000 miles.

What color is the smoke? White or black?

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

Cubic inches is like Indiana Jones with a cheap pistol.

The smoke is white. It is not the thickest smoke, but after a little drive around the block it gets thicker

'White' smoke from one exhaust bank typically means moisture in the combustion chamber which means failed head gasket or leaking intake gasket @ one of the cooling ports.

blown head gasket or cracked head my guess, especially being on drivers side....pull #1 cyl spark plug and take a look at it

Re: Smoke from one side of exhaust

I'd start by labeling plug wire addresses.
Then pull plugs 1,3,5 and 7; label each plug address w/ sharpie.
A a pic of the plug's business ends would be nice.
Variance of color and deposits may produce suspects.

Compression test. That will help narrow it down if the plugs aren't obvious.

The modulator on the side of the trans can go bad & allows trans fluid to get pulled up into the motor under certain loads causing one heck of a smoke show. Usually when it occurs, the trans doesn't shift 'right' either.

Like slams into gear when you put it in drive, or shifts hard where it puts you back in your seat "right"?

Yes. It also may not want to shift @ all (requiring you to shift through each gear manually) similar to when the vacuum line is removed from the modulator.

Re: Smoke from one side of exhaust

Re potential bad head gasket, if you look in your radiator, do you see any whisps of black/brown/rusty fluid? If you do (and have had solid green in the past) you probably have a head gasket that is starting to fail. Took two years before mine finally let go, but I finally had an answer to where that rusty colored stuff was coming from.

Alex.

Re: Smoke from one side of exhaust

pulled spark plug 1. ran a compression test. 0. nothing. the gauge wont even move. but what is weird is i ran a vacuum tester on the spark plug 1 and it showed compression through that, but after getting ahold of a compression tester it shows nothing. what does that mean? 3 and 5 are at 100.5 or so.. what does this mean? havent got too the others yet. taking a break. will check all and update the thread. thanks for the help!

Re: Smoke from one side of exhaust

You could apply compressed air to #1 and see if air escapes through ex pipe (stuck ex valve), dip stick tube (possible ring/piston failure), etc for clue.

Compare #1 and #2 valve travel vs other valves. Check valve adjustment.
I've seen severely worn rings/cylinder produce 60 psi compression.
Haven't had the pleasure to see compression for broken rings/pistons.
With 0 psi compression the culprit should be easy to find.
