Gasser look on these trucks????

Lately I've been looking at the gasser style as a possibility for my 63 step side. I've seen some very cool examples (non-60-66 chevy trucks) online and at Pomona swapmeet that I think are badass, but it wasn't until this past swapmeet in June when I spotted a 62 Chevy Impala in the works as a gasser with A-arms instead of the straight axle that I really started obsessing over it. It just looked so f-ing cool that I'm thinking of doing it to my own truck. Not for the sake of actually racing it, though I would mess around with it now and then on a track just for ****s & giggles, but mainly just to trip folks out as I pull up to the pumps or the local cruise nights. Well, what I'm wondering is if anyone of you guys/gals have actually attempted this? Any pics and info?? I want to see what it could look like. I already run 15x4.5 slots 165/15 and 15x7 steelies 275/15 which I'd like to change to some cheater slicks. Anyways, any pics please??

Cool thanks. I did not realize that this had came up before. I am still wondering if I can actually use the current IFS instead of the solid axle for the same of driving comfort. Again, I just loved the 62 Impala with A-arms at Pomona. I've read about them using spacers for the crossmembers back in the day. Any info on this?? Thanks guys.

The impalas used ball joint spacers under the lower ball joint, not sure anybody makes them anymore, maybe JC whitney, if not you have to find at swap meet.

Most cars that ran around in the 60’s with the nose up in the air did not have straight axles. A great many of the racers didn’t have them either, they just made the magazines more often. As Rich mentioned ball joint spacers and station wagon springs were far more common. And guys with 49-54 Chevy cars stuffed 4x4’s between the frame and the front suspension to get those up in the air. Here are a few random examples:







I suggest you be the first to do it with a 60-66 Chevy truck and start a whole new trend! Just jack the front end up, a straight axle isn’t mandatory. Then add all the other gasser style features and you’ll have something really unique and attention demanding.

Im not a gasser fan.. I grew up in the 70's and 80's watching drag racing and this era was pretty much over. Some cars built like are cool, but I don't know about doing trucks like that.

I can always be convinced otherwise!

back in the late 60's (around 68) there was somebody making extended spindles. if i remember right they welded two together. this was in n--calif. sorry no pics (sure wish we had digital cams then)

I wonder if I can just use some stock height springs and a set of lift spindles from any truck suspension manufacturer?? Right? What ya think?

Always wanted to tuck a Moon tank under a GMC grill and into the filler panel to pay homage to that look.

I've haven't driven anything straight axle since my 49 AD way back when.

Could be cool - I think the gasser has that look like it's gonna eat something.

Here’s a shot of mine when the bumper was off. It wouldn’t have taken much to raise the nose another 2-3”, pull the Buick grille bar and bumper brackets, trim the splash pan and stuff a Moon tank in there. Add fenderwell headers and a BDS scoop sticking through the hood on a pair of 4 barrels and it would have been getting pretty close.



And here’s a rather poor photo shop effort pasting someone else’s blower through the hood. Unfortunately the angle of the blower photo didn't lend itself to getting pasted on the first photo:

Not sure but it looks as if he has ball joiny spacers under it, or he has bagged it and just pumped them up

Hey Markeb01, that does look pretty darn close right! And that blue fleet side does look like its got bags, but that's pretty much the stance right there! Just add some 4-5" front runners and headers coming out the wheel wells! And I love those model trucks! I need to build mine as a model before I start as well just to see what I'll be looking at! Nice!

It's going to be a rough landing. There's a loose wheel to the left and a bare hub on the right.... Wonder if he spun out of his tires?

perhaps he has a ton of lead in the rear
I can remember though with one 38 ford sedan that I had which had a 3" axle in it, i put a Model A rear spring in the frt and brought it up. 8;20 x 15 on the rear and 6:?? x 15 on the frt and had an Olds in it. it didn't look to bad, but without frt shocks it didn't last long.
i was working in a gas station and going to school. I remember that one of my customers came in for gas. he was a local Vancouver dj(1963-64 period) and in the the back seat of his Caliente was Ike and Tina
and in the frt seat was Bobby Curtola and he got out and came and looked under the 38 and asked a few questions about it
