Where's your gas tank?
It's time for me to remove my gas tank to get out old gas and crud. I was considering relocating it. What percentage of 67 -72 Chevy trucks do you think have moved their tanks from the stock location?

Re: Where's your gas tank?
I'm battling with the same decision. I've run a dozen tanks of gas through mine, changed both fuel filters twice and the rust is never ending. Moving it into the truck bed is a little pricey. Ultimately I'd like to go with EFI and I don't want to pay to move it back and then upgrade for EFI. Essentially paying for it twice. I'm looking at the pour in sealer option, but not sure that is truly effective. Cheapest route is to replace old in cab tank with a new one. I'm on the fence.

Re: Where's your gas tank?
Doesn't matter what everybody else does, what works for you.
Do you want more storage/space in the cab? Want to do bodywork to shave the filler hole? Want better weight distribution? Do you haul anything ever? Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Where's your gas tank?
I'm currently helping restore a '71. The tank is just behind the rear axle, right rear tail light filler, and F.A.S.T. EZ EFI. Getting the tank out of the cab made room for some really comfy seats.

Re: Where's your gas tank?
Mine's under the hood. I had to put it there because my spare is behind the seat and the engine is in the rear

Re: Where's your gas tank?
Still rocking it in the cab. Like to have a spare tank in the rear someday but I'm not moving the tank from my cab anytime soon.

Re: Where's your gas tank?
Same here. Have no intention of moving it.
I want to be cremated when I die, so if I get in a wreck bad enough to cause an explosion, I'll just save the family a few thousand dollars with a two for one special!

Re: Where's your gas tank?
I was obviously kidding before. I've owned dozens of these trucks and never asked this question. It is where it is and that has always worked just fine. I have no issue with putting tanks under the bed,for whatever reason, but the next thing you hear people as is,"Where do I put my spare?" You go changing up on the master plan, you better figure the whole thing out first. I may do it just so I can put killer speakers behind the seat, cuz my shortbed is my traveling machine. The spare will be in the bed under the tonneau. Still haven't made that decision. Putting them in the bed is another story...why??? I just can't fathom rendering a truck so useless. I realize so many now only by trucks for their style and not their usefulness. Heck,my argument with those who say my little lowered shortbed is useless is,"I have bigger trucks. This is my car". I'm just a truck guy and if I didn't have a shortbed I'd have an El Camino. I'll always have a full-tilt hauler but even my li'l shortbed will be capable. I don't do show queens anymore. That's useless to me.

Re: Where's your gas tank?
Mine is still in the cab both trucks. Even if i relocated them i would leave the filler neck i love the look of it, and i always carry a spare with me no point in being stranded with something that simple to fix in five min. I got some of the new type of cable spare holders off the new chevy trucks i plan on using on mine back there.

Re: Where's your gas tank?
I run the one in the cab. Why mess with what is not broke? I really do need an auxilliary tank and can't decide whether to use an in bed tank or a Blazer tank...

Re: Where's your gas tank?
Great responses guys, thanks! For now I guess I'll just remove it, clean it, put a new sending unit in it and put it back in it's stock location.

Re: Where's your gas tank?
My guess would be about 25% relocate.
I relocated mine to behind the rear axle with the filler behind a drop down license plate. I used the 69 camaro tank. Installation was easy, its a 19 gal. tank and still doesnt hang down lower then the diff. Ive talked to several guys who have done this and there doesnt seem to be an issue on filling. I then used the old filler neck hole for a recessed antenna.

Re: Where's your gas tank?
Funny story...
About 12 years ago, I was backing into a driveway up in my hometown in New Hampshire in the winter and this poor kid with a new-to-him S10 slammed into the side of the stepside bed I was running at the time, hard enough to bend his frame. I wound up with a creased up fender but otherwise nothing else. I was going to let the kid go but his father was driving from the couch and wanted a police report. The officer came and looked his truck over and told him it was probably going to the junkyard. He looked at mine and I showed him my fender. The officer was astonished. He asked me if that was it and I told him what you see is what you get. "No frame damage?" "He came nowhere near it." "Gas tank damage?" "Nope, that's in the cab, he was nowhere near that either." "You mean to tell me that this fender crease is all you have from this accident?" "Yes, sir." I have since been convinced that because of it's location, it is about the safest place in the truck for a gas tank. I have read posts where it had gone bad but then I have seen firsthand where seatbelts are bad and yet we still call them safe. I might put a tank in the Blazer spot as an auxilliary but the cab tank stays. My wife had reservations at first about the smell but I told her we have vents and windows. How about the winter? She asks me. My heater has two overall settings that most can agree on, hot and blast furnace. I am not seeing the venting issue either...
