I have seen trucks that had used a 88-98 style bed, so I know it is possible. Not sure what is involved though, I did consider it for my 79, even talked to a guy about trading his 88-98 "step side" for my fleet but I decided against it b/c I could not loose the bed space.

I am putting a 88-98 stepside on my 77 I got the bed to sit better but don't have pics yet
