tranny cooler

just wondering what kind of trans coolers you guys are using,what is the best set up for a big block 509 with a turbo 400? if i were to use the new finned horizontal style do i still have to install it in front of radiator? thanks

A lot of people say to route it through the cooler and then the rad and other people say to do it vise versa, some just route through the cooler. There was a discussion on the tranny cooler in the engine and drivetrain portion of the forum.

I picked up a Long stacked plate cooler. Have too much invested in my tranny to use a cheap one. and the best place for them is in front of the rad

thanks.when i asked about the finned horizontal coolers i meant the tubular style,has anybody used them?

b&m plate style has worked well for me for years

Hi merlin3, as a past dealer mechanic of 30 plus years this is what i did. I installed a ls 5.3 4l65e in my 68 c10. I pull an airstream weighing 3,000 lbs in odrive and lockup, rpms are at 1650 and i never routed my cooler through the radiator. My trans temps in 90 degrees days when we pull into a camp site i shoot with an infared gun and i never exceed 155 degrees F. I only use my truck in the summer months as i live up north. I don't recommend routing the cooler this way for winter/colder usage as condensation can be a real problem. For summer use i say why heat up the fluid with coolant just to cool it with the cooler. I had a shift kit put in it by the best trans shop in a 150 mile radius and discussed my cooler routing and he agreed for summer use that was the best, as he said " you would never varnish the fluid at those temps".
