How does one fix a broken off drain plug in the rear? Rear has been leaking,I thoght it was the gasket, so I went to remove the drain plug ( Bolt head) it was so loose it fell off (probally already broken from P.O.)

Take the back cover off so you can see what's behind it.Then drill it and use an easy out.If you're afraid you'll hit the gears when you punch thru cut a piece of tubing to fit over the drill bit so it will stop it when it punches thru.Then flush the insides really well to clear any debris and button it back up with clean gear oil.

Check with local auto parts stores for oversized drain plug. Some are self tapping. http://www.autozone.com/autozone/acc...er=257140_0_0_

Could also purchase a thread tap and retap the hole to a standard larger size.

Just hit me... Did you mean drain plug or fill plug? Most of these trucks didn't have a drain plug that I'm aware of. Had to remove the cover to drain and change axle oil/grease.

relocate it to the rear cover.

If you move the fill hole to the rear cover make sure it is vertically in the same place.

I've never had much luck with ezouts and they are expensive to just snap off. I would weld a nut to the plug. Heat it up good with a torch. Then let it cool and spray some penetrating oil on it. It should come out.

Other than dirt or cross threading, the should not be much tension on what is left of the plug. I would remove the cover, drill through the piece of plug with about 1/4 drill bit, then work up in size. zEach time I would use an ease out or a left handed bit...... you might be surprised how easy it comes out
