72 door panels in a 70.
What is the difference in the doors between a 70 and a 72 and how does that effect the inner door panels. I am going to end up replacing most of my door internals anyway, but I don't know if the basic structure of how the inner metal door skin is laid out is vastly different, I just know some of the parts and the panel itself are different.

besides the obvious door panel difference, the only other one is that the 72 doors have a screw underneath the wing window to keep the door from separating. other than that, all other parts are the same

I think the '72 doors also had different length shafts for the window crank and the door handle than '67-'71.

Yes handles and cranks are longer to go through the 72 style door panel

if you want to install the 72 style panel use the regulators for the door and window for that year. other than the additional screw hole they are they same. The screw gave the door a little extra strength around the window divider post.

Skorpio, I put '70 doors on my '72. As others have said, you will need '72 window regulators ( longer shaft ) I had my body man put the '72 dents under the vent windows. That little screw really stiffens the door. If you decide to put the dents in your doors, don't forget there is a flared chromed tube inside the door so the screw can't pull the inner and outer panels together when the screw is tightened. It helps keep the mirrors from vibrating at highway speeds, too. Also, the '72 door panels have all their mounting holes in different places. They all have to be redrilled in the doors. And the '72 door panels use a lot of barbed plastic studs to fasten the panels to the doors. Roy

Only 72 doors had that screw. Other than that the doors are identical. All door guts interchange between 67-72. You can put any year door panel on any year door as long as you use the window and door handle shafts made for that year door panel. And,'72 door panels are the only ones that need the same year shafts,no matter what door you use.

I guess this screw is not the screw we're talking about in the '72 door:
because this is my '70 doors and they have this, it is a Jimmy and not a cab just so that is clear. Also to clarify, the panel mounting holes are different? So I'd need to drill those holes in my inner skin for those, correct? ...and those holes are for blind clips? Are they the typical barbed plastic type used by GM for years with the 3/4 disk head? Are the arm rest cage nuts from the earlier doors used in any way? I was also curious, who was a good source for reproductions of the '72 panels? The ones from LMC seem like they are different then the originals in that their woodgrain sub panels say they do not work with them, but only on original panels. Also LMC lists their woodgrain sub panels as plastic where as the counterpart ones are listed as aluminum, what are the originals? Are all these aftermarket panels the same? I like the more sculpted bottom of the '72 panels but am not wild about the decorative scroll work on them, and would like to maybe use the woodgrain inserts, recovered in upholstery to match the seats, to smooth them out a bit there. What are my options? |

The Blazers and Jimmys pre 72 had the screws as you show, but no pickups. It's just a hole that's drilled and the plastic grommet fits into it to reinforce the door in that local area since the Blazer/Jimmy window frame only goes to the top of the wing window.
In 72, they added the dimple in the door and the metallic sleeve for both the Blazer/Jimmy configuration and the pickups. And yes you'll have to drill holes in the inner door to accomodate the door panel push in fasteners. I've never used or seen the LMC panels, but I've heard the fit is fairly poor and that they shrink over time. |
