Under-hood paint question.

Hey guys,

I noticed the hood I have for my '68 build is painted black on the underside. Was that something that was typically done in this era? Its an original GM hood I bought from a guy who gave up on his build. I believe it has the original paint on the underside based on a wax pencil marking on it. I believe its an "86", whatever that means! Could be wrong.

Re: Under-hood paint question.

Mine has sort of a flat black paint on the underside. Pretty sure its original.

Re: Under-hood paint question.

I don't think they actually "painted" them black. I'm pretty sure it was the black coating, just like when you buy a new fender etc. Some got painted body color, others they just got some overspray from spraying the jamb.

Re: Under-hood paint question.

Yep, That's exactly what mine looks like. Sort of a semi-gloss black, no texture. Thanks for the pictures. I'm leaving it this way even though nothing else has been left alone!

Krylon 51613 Indoor/Outdoor Paint, Black
Is a semi-gloss rattle can black that comes pretty close to GM's under hood black. Sprays pretty nice and stays on good. Under hood heat kinda bakes it.
