Correct Rack & Pinion

Hello everyone,

I have a 54 chevy pick up with a big block in it. Right now I have a R&P from a 76 Mustang II. The problem is the steering is real sensitive and you turn the wheel a little and your almost in the next lane. I have heard of people using an 88 T-Bird rack and also a 93 Mustang rack. I have had the pressure reduced in my Saginaw pump but that did not help. I also am changing the front springs. I had Mustang V8 springs but I foolishly cut off one coil. Now the springs have settled and my lower A-frames are no longer parallel with the ground. Finally do I buy 2" dropped spindles now or do I wait to see where the ride height is after these new springs settle? Thanks everyone for your help.

Re: Correct Rack & Pinion

Wait for the new springs to settle.

Re set the alignment.

See how it drives then.

You can add an adjustable flow control valve to the system.

After all that if you want it lower then go with dropped spindles and realign it.

Re: Correct Rack & Pinion

the mustang rack needs a lower pressure , 900psi
the gm pumps 1100-1800
the Tbird rack works at a higher pressure, than the mustang rack,
i use a tbird rack with the small Aluminum Haden Pump, it's not twitchy at all.

Re: Correct Rack & Pinion

When I aligned my Mll I asked him to put as much castor as the slots in the crossmember would allow, that made a big difference in the "feel" of the steering

Re: Correct Rack & Pinion

Thank you all for your help. i am going to go with the 88 T-bird rack and see how the new springs settle. My biggest concern was/is how "fast" the 74-78 Must. II R&P is. I feel like I'm driving a go kart. Anyone used those offset bushings to mount a 88 T-Bird R&P in a crossmember that was drilled for 16" center mounting? Thanks again everyone who replied.
