fan belt help?

Ok, I have forgotten the joys of changing the fan/alternator belt. AFTER you get the alternator loose, take off the valve cover, take off the fan, how in the heck do I take off the LOWER belt to get the old fan belt off? Geeze...this should have been easy right??

Thanks
junk

Re: fan belt help?

Jodie,
You will have to loosen up the power steering pump, remove that belt, then the fan/alternator belt will come off.

LIvrat, that's what I was thinking, is there just 2 bolts? one upper and one lower? I don't have to take the bolts all the way out do I?

I've never had to remove all of that stuff on mine. Usually, I just loosen the belts and pass the old one out under and/or around the pulley if I have to. In other words, once they're loose enough, you can rotate the pulley and pass the old belt around it. On the harmonic balancer pulley you may have to rotate the crank to help pass the belt around it.

Once the belt is off its pulley I pass it around the fan blades one blade at a time while rotating the fan.

Hope that makes sense.

Re: fan belt help?

Thanks! It makes sense, The fan I prolly could have worked around, easier to take off, my valve covers are too tall and blocks my alternator from moving. Ive done this before, years ago. Its gotta be my oldtimers setting in.

There are actually three bolts, well.. to nuts and one bolt. none need removing, one bolt lower front of the ps pump, one nut lower rear ps pump, one nut upper rear ps pump adjuster, after loosening those you should be able to push the ps pump inward and remove the belt.
