Some squealing in my tranny!!

At idle or in any gear, at a higher RPM my which i believe my tranny starts to make a very high pitch squealing noise. Check it out in the video.

What do you guys think this could be? Front input shaft bearing? Its the original 4 speed on the floor. 235 engine. 1957 3600

Also i just drained the oil thinking it might help, nope it did not. And in the bottom of the drain pan i found lots of metal chunks.

How hard are these to tear apart?

Re: Some squealing in my tranny!!

it its all the time it could be the input shaft bearing or pilot bushing. ALso make sure its not something easy like the inspection cover rubbing the flywheel.

pilot bushing is no more than 300 miles old. just put a new clutch in. no inspection cover.

Did the drained fluid have suspended glitter?

I'd measure trans temp after 30 minute drive.

I'd sample new fluid for glitter.

Noises can be tricky as we all know.

Re: Some squealing in my tranny!!

1966 3 speed manual measured 130F on 85F day after 90 mile hwy trip.
The diff measured 165F.

Suspended glitter in old fluid doesn't sound right. I'd expect old glitter to have settled in bottom sludge w/ the bigger chips unless ultra fine.

A lot of the bigger chunks were on bottom. And I used my magnet to fish out as much as I could. You could tell there was small flakes in it because it would stand the oil up on the magnet but put it in your hand and was like oil.

Re: Some squealing in my tranny!!

Not unusual to have metal trash in bottom of old manual trans. Some models came w/ magnet in bottom of case.

Should you decide pull trans, don't tilt too much because the settled metal may find bearings.

Re: Some squealing in my tranny!!

Well if I do pull it I will completely tear it down and replace any worn bearings. Is there a seal gasket kit I can get for this? I have yet to find anything

Re: Some squealing in my tranny!!

I used RTV w/o gaskets on the 3 speed. No leaks.

most all the truck parts places have the gaskets. I think its novak that has everything else. Even NAPA could probably get the parts.

Re: Some squealing in my tranny!!

Well guys i got some good news, after more inspection i pinpointed where the sound is coming front. The front of my engine!! Either the pully balancer on my crank (its loose and wobbly) 90% sure its that. Or my water pump. Feels pretty solid though.

After a 50 minute drive in 90F temps tanny temped out at 140F and diff temped out at 140F
