When I finished my truck I noticed the brakes were stiff and even if I pushed to the floor it would not complete stop, so I screwed in the brake booster rod and the pedal felt great and the brakes worked...

until I noticed how incredibly hot the front wheels were getting, turns out the booster rod was adjusted to far in and was not allowing the piston from the master cylinder to come far enough back to completely release the front disc brakes. Bad for pads not to mention gas mileage. lol

Now if I adjust the booster rod far enough that the disc will disengage after I take my foot off the pedal, it leaves a stiff pedal that will not stop well and not much emergency stop at all. But if I adjust the rod enough to get good pedal then the brakes will not disengage.

Where do you suggest I start? My first guess would be to bleed the brake lines again (been done twice) this time using a pump or vacuum and go from there, in case I missed some stubborn air bubbles.

Any other suggestions or anyone else every had this problem?

It's been a while.... about 10 years. BUT if I remember right the internal push rod from the Booster to MC is adjustable too. This my be your problem.

Make sure the rear brakes are adjusted up good.

Hmmm... internal push rod, that may be the answer. I am glad you can remember things from ten years ago... I have trouble with 10 minutes ago! lol

I did 66 C1000 brake job in 2006. New front drums, all new wc,new mc, front flex and all new shoes. Those are the worst drum brake shoes I've ever experienced; and I've installed my share. Bad from day 1. Hard pedal but I don't think truck would skid on wet road. I noticed the shoes have hair line cracks when I cleaned them a while back. Cleaning helped zero.

I have some Raybestos 228PG in the mail. I'm hoping they will work.

FWIW. The ordered Raybestos were out of stock. No time, so I bought front shoes from OReilly's. During bleed I discovered that rear flex line was completely plugged which means no rear brakes. Installed new rear flex and Oreilly front shoes and brakes work good now. Not sure why old front shoes were cracked.
