Quadrajet Replace or Rebuild

I've got 72 C20 with 402. Only 59,000 miles but such little us over the past 10 years carb seems to be maybe gunked up. Won't idle very smooth, runs down the highway fine though. Truck is super straight and clean, Orig. except tires, exhaust,shocks, spark plugs and wires. Should I rebuild Orig. card or is there a much better performing replacement I should use that will accept factory air cleaner etc.

There's not a better performing replacement. I'd rebuild it. Cliff Ruggles is a really nice guy and sells premium kits at reasonable prices. His book has just about everything you'd want to know about Quadrajets in it:

Yes, rebuild is the response I thought I would get and staying original I thought just made the most sense. Guess I'll just have to buy another truck that is a project and build a power plant for it. Thanks for the tip on where to get a rebuilld kit from.

The Q-jet is a great carb yet also complex. So building one is not for beginners.

As long as the carb is original and hasn't been monkeyed with by someone who don't know what they're doing, I would say rebuild it. They are great carburetors.

I have also seen a number of quadrajets that were damaged beyond repair by shade tree mechanics who thought they knew how to rebuild one.

I vote keep it and rebuild.
And I've seen professional mechanics who thought they knew how to rebuil one.

I ordered the parts from Cliffs High performance today. Will have my local Mech. who's got plenty of old school skills to rebuild it. Thanks for the input

Even though I prefer Eddy, I'd rebuild the Q if it's OEM to truck.

I trading OEM carb as core when I bought reman carb at parts store years back; twas mistake.

I am mechanically inclined as one would say, rebuilding the QJet is easy with Ruggles book. Take your time, follow the directions, avoid interruptions and it is cake...... Night and Day difference and I knew that the throttle shaft needed rebushed, but did not do it because I lacked the confidence that the rebuild would work.... Runs to good to take it back off....
