My 71 TR6 build

Hi! I amaze myself, that it didn't take long to get another project! I had already put this on my 59 Apache build thread. I saw and MGB at the latest Nifty50ees car show, and it looked like one could fit in our garage, as small as it's become. But then, I looked at the Triumph TR6! I like it better, but they are both nice sports cars, just that the TR6 body can come off vs the mgb won't. We paid 5800, but it's in need of work! Nothing special other than take it apart, fix stuff, rewire, fix more stuff, paint and body, put it back on the road. I do plan a Tan interior and unsure of the color this TR6 will wind up being, however it will be a stock color, and it will have AC! The www.6-pack.org site is full of TR enthusiasts, much like this site, wonderful fun loving people! Why can't the world be more like us!

I don't have it here right now; it's at my Moms home until I can continue making more room here at our home. That's about it for now. It will be a week or so before I begin, but in the meantime, still finishing up my 59 Chevy Apache!

I'd have to say, the TR6 was one of the best.
British racing green is the only color I can picture one in and tan upholstery will make it perfect. Truly a fine machine!

I had sent my Stromberg carburetors to a man known for overhauling them, and just received them yesterday! The picture below is the before and I hope the carbs were the running problem, it needed to be done anyway.
but also yesterday, I pulled the right front wing(fender) as it's in kind of bad shape. A new one is 600 bucks! ouch. But there's a man in Houston that has some used parts that I'm going to check out Saturday. He wants 50 bucks for a fender that's in better shape than mine. While I had the wheel off, I have some frame restoration and floor pan work ahead of me! Fun ~(gag me with a spoon!) I will figure out how to make a rotisserie this time since it's a small car!

When I was in High School I had a 59 TR3, not exactly a good car for Iowa. In the summer it was HOT and in the winter I looked like a Eskimo driving it. I had to borrow my mom's car for dates most of the time. I still loved it for all of it's misgivings.

Wow, that'd be worth a pretty penny today! I'm just learning about the Triumph's and they can be a pricey ride!

Thank you! Those look like some good ideas for a lesser expensive rotisserie! My TR looks to be quite small, perhaps the two engine stands could work in my my case. Thanks again!

Hi Gang, sorry it's been so long since I've posted! I've been so busy with things, my project TR6 gets kind of put off~ y'all know what I'm talking about!

First off, the original frame was too rusted to mess with, so I found a rollling chassis in Louisiana which was in very good condition, so that's what I've been working on for the past few months along with other mini home projects.



I did wind up making a rotisserie out of engine stands, I had one already, so off to HF to buy a second one! Actually need another one for the engine!


I fabricated another back end of the engine stands to elevate it to level out the rotating part, and casters to be able to move the frame around in the garage.


I did make a makeshift sandblasting booth and blasted most of the frame, then coated it with Rust Bullet and coated the inside of the frame with Eastwoods internal frame coating.


Though a common problem, the differential mounts break, rust, and the PO on this one attempted a repair while the body was still on.


so, I bought a differential repair kit and went to work, and got to test my welding skills I'm pleased with the outcome.


so, that's where I am right now, I haven't even started on the body! I must admit, there's more to these little TR's than I would ever imagined, but I'm bound and determined to make it a nice car!

Thanks guys for chiming in The frame has been relatively "easy", but challenging, but the Tub; mainly floor and sills are is pretty bad shape. The floors were covered with sheet metal) I'm looking at TR6 restoration where the person has done all the sandblasting, repairs on the rolling chassis, engine, etc, and just wants to bail out of it, but I haven't heard from him I hate it when people don't put phone numbers on the CL listing! In the meantime, there's plenty to do

Long ago....My 1st car was a 69 TR-6 it had been wrecked and I had no idea mechanically about these cars. The weak link was the rear end mounting you just beefed up..The motor ran great and if the synchromesh worked it was a blast to drive.

Well, I gave up on the original Tub~ it was just in too bad of shape and would cost too much to repair vs just buying another Tub. Gary and I drove to Kansas City and bought this Tub which still needs some repair, but nothing extensive like the old Tub.

In the meantime, I built a Gantry Crane as can be seen in a link below. It's the Biggest structure that I've ever made and turned out very well.

Hi Gang! Sorry to have been away for so long! I have been very busy with my build as with any builds, sometimes we go different directions with strategy.

I'm going to take y'all back in time, keeping in mind, this project is near completion, but would be too much information and too many pictures at one sitting for any sane person!

First off, I decided not to use the TR6 drivetrain! This was the doner car, a 99 Miata 1.8, 5 speed. I used almost the entire wiring harness, the steering column(modified). So, basically it's a miata with a TR6 body! lol


For the differential, I used an early 90s Nissan 300z 4.08:1 positrac. IT's an upgrade to the stock tR6 diff. A kit is made to bolt it directly to the frame and to the axles.


This is the aftermarket AC system that I made work. It looks pretty messy here, but I assure you it worked out very well putting out 45 degree air


Since I did not use the stock TR gauges, and had AC coming out of the dash, I had to make my own wooden dash. It was a challenge!


At this point, everything is working, a test drive was made. I'm still waiting on parts for the interior. I bought the carpet from ebay and edged the carpet with vinyl edging. Notice the steering column with a detachable steering wheel.


I love my engine! I exposed the timing belt. I bought another valve cover and did the same exposure to it, but it's crinkle Ferrari red and I'll install it pretty soon


The hard top, Gary and I drove to Sarasota Florida to buy it from a fellow TR member on the 6-pack.org site where I've resided a great deal during my build, and on a miata forum. The stripes are Forest Green metallic.


I recently had the windows tinted and still working on ideas for side decals/graphics; something simple.


And yes, I painted everything!

dne, saw your post on the 59 thread about the TR6. Wow you've done some great work on this car. Looks great and I'm sure you will enjoy it. Brought back memories of my 67 MGB that I bought new in Germany, and shipped back to USA. When we had our first child it had to go, sure miss it, like many of the other cars I've owned. Jim, I'm 62 and I can say the same as to where has time gone! We just need to take good care of ourselves, and so should everyone to make the years more 'tolerable', but we just can't slow them down!
