First full build on a college budget

Hey guys, just recently picked up a 73 chevy c10 swb. My dad used to have an 82 when i was little and i loved it and always said i would have one, and i finally found one for the right price. Went and picked the truck up and immediately started tearing out the interior, truck needs quite a bit of work to where i want it to be but its in progress finally and will slowly be getting built up as time and money permit, going in to my last semester of college so this should be interesting.

My dad ows a stereo shop and thats all i have done since i was 14 so the stereo should be pretty different than most older style trucks. The dash was already cut when i got it so i didnt have to contemplate on if i wanted to cut or not. Anyways heres the plans:

Custom console, will hold all amps and sound processor and have a see through top showing off amps.

Fiberglass dash, have already stripped all the vinly and padding, dash will also have an ipad mini mount fiberglassed in, which will run off bluetooth from the stereo.

Fiberglassed kick panels, which will hold an 8" shallow mount sub each, which will handle midbass duties

Fiberglass door panels which will hold component speakers.

New piant

Dropping in a new SB 250

Hopefully i will drop it soon, not sure on the drop or if i will do bags yet.

Im sure im missing some stuff but it will get covered when i get to that point, on to the pictures.

Day i picked it up

Interior when i got it.

Half way dynamtted

Front clip taken off

New carpet

Kick panel template and subwoofer ring

8" subwoofers in the kick panels

Where it sits today

Still have a long ways to go, but i plan to do it how i want and do it right the first time, so im not disappointed in the long run.. Hope you guys enjoy and let me know any feedback you might have!

Re: First full build on a college budget

Havent got to work on the truck much this past week. Between being out of town and working just seems like theres not enough time. My dad has a 69 camaro, that hes pulling the motor out of and putting in a new one he built. So hes going to give me the motor and trans out of the camaro. Plans are hopefully to get some aluminum heads for it, have it machines and bored out, a new carburetor and maybe a few other things depending on cash.

In the meantime i did get a a few hours to work on it. I almost have the kick panels with the 8" subs ready to be glassed, and i have the dash cut for the ipad as well as wrapped and ready to be glassed. Im leaving for Vegas in the morning so ill have to finish up the glassing when i get back. But enjoy the pictures.

Re: First full build on a college budget

Well i have gotten a chance to work on the truck a little bit. I ordered my seats this week, and they should be here tomorrow, so ill get them mounted and then take measurements and start the building of my console. I was able to get the kick panels wrapped and glassed, they still need a few more layers of mat and then will need to be body worked and sanded, still not sure if im going to paint them or wrap them in vinyl.

I was also able to get some of the glassing on the dash done. I covered it in fleece, and glassed it, then was able to take my fiberglass pan for the ipad mini and start to mold it into the dash. It may not be everyones taste, but i think it should turn out pretty good. The plan is to have it stream audio and video through bluetooth, and when i get the bags done i plan to use the ipad mini with the acuair system to control the bags. So everything will be able to be ran right of the ipad, and its held in the pan with magnets and is able to pop in and out, so i will be able to remove the ipad when i want to. Should turn out pretty cool.

The kick panels for the 8" subs.

Hope you all enjoy, hopefully will get to mount the seats tomorrow if not friday. And plan on working on the truck quite a bit this weekend, so stay tuned.

Re: First full build on a college budget

Thanks! I had a few questions for a member on here, I think his username might be ogre? But I can't seem to find it. He has a yellow pickup, and has done lots of fiberglassing to the inside as well as some under hood stuff. I had a few questions for him on fiberglassing, so if anyone knows who I might be talking about let me know, please!

Re: First full build on a college budget

If I may comment on the use of the iPad for a minute. Technology is very cool, but please be careful here. I know we have heard it all before, but if texting and driving is dangerous, then this has the potential of being 10x such. These are not just my words, they are my "technology" experience.

My 2001 Ford Crew Cab Dually after the brief meeting with an 18-wheeler (while trying to change XM stations). I was running 73 MPH according to the GPS logs I recovered after the accident.

By the way, nice job on the dash, that's going to look top notch!

Re: First full build on a college budget

Yes sir I completely agree. The iPad will be mostly for shows. I go to a lot of car audio shows as well as car shows, so having the iPad will make it look cool but I'll also be able to take it out of the truck and control the music.

But I completely agree, I'm sorry about your wreck though, hopefully your alright and didn't get seriously hurt!

Re: First full build on a college budget

I was fortunate enough to walk away with only broken glass in my hair and skivies, but it could have been much worse.

Sorry if I sounded like a Dad in that last post, but I started taking life very seriously after that day :-)

Yep, with distractions in your truck/car and having to be careful with other drivers and their distractions, it can be dangerous out there. Stay safe guys and watch out for everything!

This build is looking nice! I think my wheels are the same, though in white. Do you know what style/brand they are? Are they factory? I have a '78.

Re: First full build on a college budget

Got a little done this weekend. Got the motor and tranny pulled from the truck. Also got the motor from the camaro pulled and on the engine stand, and put the new motor in the camaro.

Should be ordering some parts this week for the motor hopefully. Plan is to clean up the block and re-paint it, possibly some aluminum heads, new cam, lifters, springs, intake manifold, carb, headers, etc. Got alot of cleaning to do while the motor is out though, everything is just covered in grease. Will try to get some pictures up soon.

Re: First full build on a college budget

Havent really gotten a chance to get much done. Waiting on my frame and engine paint so i can get that done. In the mean time i got the seats mocked up and made a little bit of progress on the dash, as well as mocked up the center console using cardboard. Not positive ill stick with the design for the console but we shall see. The dash is just a slow process of primering, body fill, sand, primer, body fill, sand, etc. So hopefully will be spraying paint on it in a few days.

Heres the seats and the mock up of the console so far.

Re: First full build on a college budget

Hey guys, havent gotten anything done. I headed back to college for my last semester, i ended up taking the dash with me so i can finish it while im here.

But today i found out i have mono, so wont be able to work on the dash for a few more days. Hopefully as soon as i get the dash finished, ill bring the kick panels down and get them done, and then the console. I also got all my por-15 paint in for the frame so ill get started on that as soon as i get back as well. Im wanting to order my dropmember soon, but i know i need to wait until i finish school so i guess ill hold out.
