Another red 64 swb

Well I thought I should start a build thread for my truck. I brought the truck from Arizona earlier this year and had it shipped to Australia. Took a few months for it to arrive but I think it was worth the wait. The truck had a frame off restoration a number of years ago and looks to have lived a fairly pampered life ever since.

Ideally I just wanted a truck I could get in a drive not a project but there is a few things the truck needs done to it before I can get it on the road here.

The guy that restored the truck is dead and the previous owner only has limited info on what parts or upgrades were done to the truck. It's had a tilt column and front disc brake upgrade done to it. It's still running drums on the back but has been converted to 5 stud. Engine wise it's running a 327 and 700r trans.

If it's a 64, backup lights were added.

Re: Another red 64 swb

Thanks LostMy 65.

I've got a bit of a to do list but it's really good base to start with. Hardest part is working out what has been modified and where it has come from. I have small shipment of parts already on it way to Australia but there's a stack more stuff i want to order.

yeah I think the guy that restored it shopped around and collected a number of later parts for it. I doubt it was dealer optioned AC originally and 327 V8's were 66 only too.

Re: Another red 64 swb

I've put the truck into storage for a month or so as I'll be away for a couple of weeks and moving once i get back.

The brakes are terrible. While driving it to the storage place and the traffic stopped unexpectedly in front of me. I though I had plently of distance between me and the van ahead. As soon as put my foot on the brake I knew I was in trouble. It just wasn't pulling up fast enough. I then made the mistake of pumping the pedal and lost a further 50% of my braking power. The only thing that saved my bacon was that the traffic started moving again. It was still to close for comfort.

I really hadn't driven the truck since it arrived as the steering column had a collapsed bearing and that was the fist thing that needed attention. Looks like the brakes will be the next item on the list. I have to work out what disc brake set up i have in the front and how they converted the rear end to five stud. Then I guess I need to measure how much vacuum I have going to the booster too before I can decide what i'm going to do.

For now though the truck is in storage so it will have to wait till I get back.

Yep, brakes on these trucks, even in good working order, leave something to be desired.

Re: Another red 64 swb

Had the truck in storage for awhile as haven't had any time to play with it. Got it back a couple of weeks ago and still haven't touched it. Below is a photo from when i picked it up from the storage company. It was a little bit out of place surrounded by exotic sports cars.

Started stripping out the old seam sealer in the drip rails on the cab. It had shrunk and the paint has cracked all around it. Bit of a shame as now the roof will need painted so now debating on if i should go two tone and paint the roof white and do the stripes down the side too. The bonus is the top of the cab and drip rails are 100% solid.

Re: Another red 64 swb

Got all the sealant out of the drip rail here's a photo of the old sealant.

Guessing it was latex based due to the amount of shrinkage. Found the onset of rust in a few spots but it was where there was sealer older than the stuff i just removed. The older sealer was more like bog and not flexible.

Re: Another red 64 swb

Not much of an update but I have a stack of parts on order. It's so much harder when no parts are available locally especially when the truck has a few things modified on it. I've managed to work out what most of the parts have come off and fingers crossed I ordered the right replacement parts. Due to parts been on back-order they probably won't get here till January.

Re: Another red 64 swb

Ordered some bits from Summit and Brothers. After a waiting on parts that were on backorder I finally have a stack of parts to play with... shame I have to wait till next week before I have a chance to fit any of it.

The air cleaner doesn't sit on the carb properly either so I will print up a spacer to correct that some time over the next week as well.

This might also explain why the brakes aren't fantastic

Oh man, that is a beautiful truck. Is that a tilt steering column? By the way, I think you might wanna replace that brake fluid

Yes, its a new Ididit tilt column. The tilt column in the truck is flogged and has been shortened which is an illegal modification here. I've got new pads and disc rotors to fit on the front so changing the fluid was on the to do list anyway.

Steering wheel is on the wrong side of the truck for yall isn't it? How does that affect registration for these type of vehicles? Love the truck!
