Q-Jet rebuild help needed

Carb number is 7042220. It sits on a 70 GMC, 2500, 400BB, w/air, auto trans.

I took tons of before pics. I've got most of it back together, except for 2 parts. Dang thing tried to get away from me during disassembly. I did not see where these parts were located:

The vacuum type canister, I know where it goes. It's the 2 little parts...I got no clue.

Well, I'm not sure exactly which two little parts you are talking about.
The part that looks like the "goodyear winged shoe" prevents the secondaries from opening when choke is engaged.
The two little arms, one green the other bare, go inside with the rod linking the two. The green one goes on bottom. Kinda hard to get it in properly.

I hope this helps. If not try to post pics of the parts you are talking about.

According to the schematic that came in the box(who'da thought to read the instructions?),
the 2 little parts in this pic are...
...on the left w/a single hole is nbr 48 (sec lockout 4mv)
...bottom w/a hole on either end is nbr 49 (lever-intermed choke)

Now..how to get that little 49 in position(grin).

mmiddle is right. The piece on the left in this pic is the secondary lockout tab. You don't have to have this in if you don't want it. It is a device used to keep the secondaries from opening before the motor is warm. If you don't rage on a cold motor, you don't need it. I leave them out on my carbs and certain customers, but I also leave them in on other customers--like guys whose kids drive their vehicles.



You can see it in this pic at the front of the pin that goes through the secondary throttle shaft:



The other tab in the first pic is the lower link for the choke rod. You have to put the choke rod through the small hole in the tab, then dangle it down the v-shaped hole in the carb lid next to the choke housing while trying to install the choke pulloff assembly through the big hole in the tab. It is a bit of a challenge, but after you do a few of them it gets a lot easier. The way I usually do it is to dangle the tab down the hole vertically on the end of the choke rod, put the pulloff assembly into the hole in the side of the carb so it pushes on the tab enough to hold it, then push the choke rod down which rotates the tab down counter-clockwise (looking at the passenger side of the carb) then fiddle around with the pulloff assembly to get it to go through the hole. The link will be somewhat close to level when it finally gets installed, but it has to start down the hole in the lid vertically. It might take a couple (or ten) tries to get it in there.

Hey, don t.-72gmc. I recently did this too!. Tape that small lever to a small screwdriver and wiggle it into place- its gonna take paitence!! Also an excellent resource is a book by Cliff Ruggles, How to rebuild and modify your Rochester Quadrajet. Great info and illustrations.

Hey Loom... What I ended up doing, once I got all the jets and stuff that hang from the top half of the carb in place, I put the lever on the end of the shaft. I picked up and tilted the carb to where the end of the lever was within view of the hole in the side of the carb. Put carb on bench w/the hole pointing up. A tiny screwdriver moved the lever hole into place. Slid choke assembly inplace. Sounds harder than it really was.

Carb is in place, truck started and ran decent, but the carb will need a tweek.
