6 lug to 5 lug swap

I have my 72 5lug axles I want to swap over to my 68 rear end. What is my step by step process? I remember that the diff needs to be opened up to remove something, but I just can't afford any surprises when doing this swap.

Re: 6 lug to 5 lug swap

You will need to buy aftermarket 5-lug axles for the narrower 67-69 rearend.
Check Moser Engineering.

You should sell me those '72 axles. They will fit my '70. Send me a PM if you're interested. I'm up in Fort Mill, S.C. and come to Columbia frequently.

Re: 6 lug to 5 lug swap

Sure.
The 71-72 rearend is 1.5" wider (total) than your '68 rearend.

Re: 6 lug to 5 lug swap

So if I was to swap the rear end, it would look like a clown car with the tires sticking out too far?

Not sure what you mean by that. Ha.
It's only 3/4" per side wider.

And your brake drums.
Otherwise you will have to use 71-72 brake drums.
This will require the center hub of your 6-lug axles to have to be machined to a smaller diameter.

Re: 6 lug to 5 lug swap

Your best bet is to go with the moser 5 lug conversion. I wouldn't mess with redrilling anything. Although it would work.

I'm starting to notice the difference in some of the pics I see online of c10's. it isn't as bad as I had first visualized, but I can see the tires sticking out past the step sides in some applications. But doesn't that mean the step side fenders for swb are different sizes for 68-72 c10's ?

The C10-30 K10-20 stepside fenders are the same 68-72. 67 differs only by not having the marker cutout. IIRC there are eight different fenders covering 67-72 stepsides.
67 right
68-72 right
67 left
67 left w/115"wb w/side mount spare cutout
67 left w/side mount spare cutout, except 115"wb
68-72 left
68-72 left w/115"wb w/side mount spare cutout
68-72 left w/side mount spare cutout, except 115"wb

Any apparent placement of the wheel relative to the fender lip will depend on four things.
installed axle width WMS to WMS
wheel width
wheel backspacing
axle laterial centering
