1994 4x4 Suburban Trans in a 1985 GMC?
Hello all! Happy to have joined.
Stayed up till 4AM last night envying other SWB truck owners that are so far along on their rebuild project. Hopefully someone can help. I foolishly sold my engine and transmission, that was in my truck, thinking the motor was a 305. I noticed it was a 350 after the guy pulled it and loaded it in his truck, and already paid me for the set. I also noticed that the transmission was a long tail. I had already planned on putting my 350 and transmission from my 1994 K1500 4x4 suburban in the truck. Less miles on motor! Rebuilt transmission about 2 years ago. 1) Will the transmission from my suburban work since I read it is controlled by the computer? 2) Is it the same size as the transmission that came out of the truck? (Length wise.) It is the stock transmission that came in my suburban. 3) All I have to do is change the intake manifold and put a carb on the 350 for it to work in the 85, right? I do not want the TBI and the 500 sensors that comes with it. Thanks in advance guys! I really need to know. If the transmission will not work, I am going to part the burban out and take that money to build a 383 and get another transmission.

You haven't told us what trans you had, and what trans you now have. '94 transfer case is the wrong side drop for your truck. And for the record, TBI only needs 5 sensors to work. And it's one of the simplest, and greatest fuel delivery set-ups ever. Ever.

The transmission that I sold was a TH350 long tail transmission. I was hoping my suburban was a TH350 long tail as well, so it would bolt right in. I did not want to have the computer in my 85. So, I was hoping the transmission from my suburban did not need the computer. Also, this is a 2WD truck that I want to put the transmission in. It will stay a 2WD truck, no 4WD. Thanks for your response. I crawled all over Google and couldn't even find out what transmission is in my suburban. Or the specs on it.

Re: 1994 4x4 Suburban Trans in a 1985 GMC?
Ok, I searched a different way and found my transmission in my 1994 K1500 Suburban is either a 4L60E, or a 700R.
Anyone know anything about either, and if they will work in my 1985 GMC without the computer? As far as length, vs the long tail TH350 that was in the 85 GMC before I foolishly sold it? The transmission is bolted to the motor, sitting in the suburban right now. I just wanted to lift the motor and transmission out together, and drop them in place on the 85 GMC frame and be done with that part. But, if the transmission wont work, I would just leave them both be and sell the suburban (Whole) for parts. Thanks

You'll have the 4l60E. Won't work without the computer. Best replacement if you're going carbed is a 700R4. You should be able to find a shop that'll swap with you, they're very similar except for how they're controlled.

Well many problems here.
The transmission from your Suburban is a 4L60E, will not work without the computer. Also, being a 4WD trans, would need the output shaft and tailhousing to be changed to 2WD stuff. Which requires the trans to be disassembled. |

I am in over my head since I sold the original equipment. I will fix the transmission problem with a new one. Either a swap, or a new 700R4. So thanks, because that was my next question, was if my suburban transmission wouldn't work, what transmission would be best. Thanks fellas.

Re: 1994 4x4 Suburban Trans in a 1985 GMC?
Please forgive my ignorance. I have never climbed under my suburban. Up until 2008 I was one of the (take it to the shop kinda guys).
I do know most things, but this is my second attempt at my first build of a C-10 with my own two hands. Had I not sold the original parts, (like a dumb ass), I would have only needed help with maybe the rewiring, and a few body work questions. The rest would have been self explained when removing the items on how to re-install them. I do not know what heads will work on different engines, nor rear end gear sizes. Hell, I do not even know how to do a positive rear end. I am not even close to knowing the difference between a 700R and a TH350 transmission. And if the trans needs a PC to function, I am screwed for sure. Hands on learning, with help from guys like you is the best way to learn these things. Thanks for taking the time to write, and help me out.

If you decide to go with the 700R4, find one that has a casting line that goes right through one of the cooling line bosses, that's the strongest case. Also, the later it was made, the better, they have better internals and all the upgrades.
