Inline 292 mods, parts, common problems
Hey, just wanting to meet some people with 292's. I just bought 2 292's. One is a '65, the other a '67 for $300. no pulleys but everything else there. Also came with a extra head. the guy had lump ported the head he gave to me. Real nice old man just cleaning out his garage. but just wanting to get some people currently rebuilding or rebuilt a 292 and maybe give me some pointers or just send in pics. I have a lot of ideas and want it to have its own style. not looking to turbo charge, but subtle horsepower gains. also thinking about putting a K&N air filter on my carb. now its a clamp on but with a little fabrication i believe itll work. get a pipe 2"-4" with an I.D. the same as the carb O.D. and weld in a 1/4'x1/4''xthe width of the pipe, drill the hole so the bolt with still thread into the carb and clamp on the air filter. thinking about this one, same shape as the inline.

Re: Inline 292 mods, parts, common problems
well today i started on exhaust leak. also going to straighten out the P/S pump and A/C. for some reason the A/C bracket is sitting cockeyed. luckily the pulleys for the P/S and A/C are not worn down where i need to replace them. Also I was giving these original 292 emblems from an old man when i bought two 292's earlier this year. saw a 73 or 74 parked at my local parts store thats used for a display. going to copy that 350 grill logo with my 292 emblem. should look pretty good.

Long tube headers are a must for this engine. Substantial performance gains. You will need to notch the power steering bracket a little to get them to fit and the alignment pins in the heads will need to come out and be tapped. Clifford performance has a tech page that will tell you about optimum exhaust set up. I would do exactly as they prescribe, they have 1000's of straight-six research hours and dyno testing.
After that an intake from CLifford, water heated. Heated is important to help balance mixture in the outer cylinders. Very easy to hook up. Watch your header flanges and make sure they are the same width as the intake so they will mount evenly.

Re: Inline 292 mods, parts, common problems
I agree that headers will help, but they will only give a modest gain. The alignment pins that are on both ends of the manifold flange are already threaded. Soak for a day with penetrating fluid and turn out with a good vice-grip. Replacing with threaded studs is best. Originally the 3rd and 6th hole from the end have threaded studs. I and others install studs in all eight holes for more even clamping.
If you find a used Clifford intake that doesn't have the water passage, it will work fine except in really cold weather. That's assuming you make sure you have a properly working choke. 292's are generally cold blooded and the heated manifold doesn't help that much. Many people prefer the Offenhauser 4 bbl intake for the street and they are not heated. Many places such as Summit and Jegs sell the Offy. Clifford sells the Clifford. Nothing special, but runs well. 23 pages of inline pictures. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...ht=offenhauser

Re: Inline 292 mods, parts, common problems
now with the after market air intakes, where do would i run the water line to keep them heater? also when i first removed the air intake and exhaust manifold, had them machined, then replaced the gasket, i replaced the double threaded studs with grade 8 bolts, and lock washers. i didnt see a point in buy the studs(they were toast, nuts barely stayed on and they were sloppy when installed in the head). the bolts seem to be working fine, other than not putting any lock tight on them.
Thats a nice looking 292 richard J. Mine being a 1978 its a light blue. almost a Chrysler blue. bought a can of chevy blue spray paint to just paint some of the small stuff and its not the correct color. Im curious to what color it might be.

Re: Inline 292 mods, parts, common problems
The pins in my 77 250 were in no way threaded. The water heated intake helps even out the fuel mixture and is recommended. I would stud all the holes. The long tube headers with dual exhaust makes a big difference especially in torque increases. Put a cam in it and you have a nice engine.
