Still Like Your Flowmaster 50's?

Rebuilding my tired 350 and figure it's time to upgrade a few other items that need attention too. New radiator, power-steering pump, u-joints, brakes, A/C overhaul, get the dealer-installed (in 1978) cruise-control working and I'm going to slap dual exhaust on it. From my research, I'm thinking 50-Series Flows as from what I've read they have plenty of rumble without being annoying on a long drive. So, do you still like your 50's? It has a single glass pack on it now which I honestly do not hate but I'd like a more modern, refined sound. I've got a Corsa system on my C5 Corvette which sounds amazing but I have not seen much talk of Corsa on this forum. Perhaps they don't make any mufflers for our trucks and just specialize in cat-back systems for newer vehicles.

Thanks.

Re: Still Like Your Flowmaster 50's?

I have dual 50s on my '63. It's not obnoxious but does have a little drone in the cab at certain RPMs. I added tailpipes all the way out the back, Which actually changed the "drone" rpm. The drone is still there, but not in my 65-70 mph rpm range anymore. I'm happy enough to keep them now.

Love my Flows. What others hear as drone, I hear as purr. And the growl at lower RPMs makes me feel like a kid.

Re: Still Like Your Flowmaster 50's?

I run 40's now and its obnoxioisly loud, but that what I wanted. My 07 used to run gibsons. Throaty when you gave it some pedal but mellow and no droan. If you don't want the highway droan just a little throat I'd look at some of the better priced magnaflows..

Re: Still Like Your Flowmaster 50's?

I have Flowmaster 70s and they are awesome mix of both worlds. When you get on it you got what you want...some grunt. But at idle or cruising it is quiet until you want to scare someone. Check my signature for videos

I run a generic turbo muffler, good sound when you get on it and not at cruise level and it has a good sound at idle

When I was younger, generic turbos were all my small-town muffler shop carried so we didn't know there was much else. They always sounded great in my opinion and were cheap to buy.

So many choices!

Re: Still Like Your Flowmaster 50's?

Everybody has their own definition of what is too loud, and what sounds good. Fifty series are fairly quiet if you are just cruising around. louder when you get on them. Quiet is relative though, you can still hear the exhaust when you are cruising, but its not overbearing if you ask me. If you don't want to hear the exhaust at all when cruising then they would not be a good choice. They are much more tame then the forty series are.

I won't be buying any more mufflers from flowmaster for myself. It seems their quality has plummeted since their earlier days. I still have a set of forty series on a truck of mine that are about twenty years old, and they are still in great shape. Every flowmaster I have had since thenon various vehicles, probably eight or so mufflers, hasn't lasted. They have fallen apart from the inside, some just rattle, others have had pieces come out of the exhaust. I cut one open when I pulled it off the car and it had absolutely nothing left inside of it. Its a shame, because I do like the sound of flowmasters.

Turbo mufflers do nothing for me, they all sound like glasspacks to me, and I just dont care for it. You are correct on the corsa, they usually have just made their cat back systems. Pricey ones at that. But I did see somewhere they do have mufflers you can buy now, still on the spendy side though. Have not heard what they sound like though. I do like the sound they give to the corvettes.

I recently put a set of the truck/rv mufflers from spintech on a truck of mine. They are supposed to be a lot more mellow then their other muffflers when cruising. Its pretty reasonable cruising around, you can hear the pipes, but can still hold a conversation just fine. But they definitely wake up when you push the skinny pedal.

Keep in mind when comparing exhaust sounds/tones, and decibel levels. That the size of the tubing changes everything, and the routing/length of the exhaust. And of course, the motor making the noise to begin with.

Re: Still Like Your Flowmaster 50's?

Hey busted crank, I don't know what turbo's your listening to but they sound nothing like glasspacs and the shape and size are no where close, a glasspac is a staright thru design and turbos have baffels in them

Re: Still Like Your Flowmaster 50's?

I run 30 series Flowmasters and while it is loud and has a definite drone at 2500 RPM's, it's still quieter than it is with my header dumps open! Bottom line is I love them.

Re: Still Like Your Flowmaster 50's?

I've got a lead on some Corsas. Going to see how that pans out. I've got the touring models on my Vette and love the sound. Very different for sure and not everybody would like it probably. No drone technology is great on the Corsas. When you step on the skinny pedal they really wake up but are nice and docile around town and on long highway cruises. I'll let you know how it works out.

I don't have video of mine but here is the Touring on another C5 Vette.

Re: Still Like Your Flowmaster 50's?

Found out from the seller that the Corsa part # is 14150 which was used on the older Northstar V8's/Auroras. Brand new, never installed. Touring model so it's the milder exhaust note. I really like the sound. Sounds pretty much like the touring exhaust on the Vette.

These videos really show you how mellow they can be at idle but how loud they can be when you open it up.

Re: Still Like Your Flowmaster 50's?

I agree with TX. I have really liked my magnaflows. At first I thought I would like a little more rumble, but since I am at hwyspeeds so much, The lound at cruise wasn't needed. When I hit it, you do hear them. On the outside, they sound Great.

My 83 has Borla's on it (prior owner). Truck sounds good, but LOUD it is.

I like the 80 dollar ones from Summit. They look like normal turbo mufflers from the outside.

This is the big one (3 inch) I put on my big block truck recently.

That's a "super high flow" catalytic converter in the picture. I have to pass a visual inspection for converter where I live. I will decline to comment further on the internals of that converter to keep from incriminating anyone.

Re: Still Like Your Flowmaster 50's?

I like how Flowmasters sound now as much as ever. Drone is a sound a weak engine makes, especially in overdrive. I've never heard Flowmasters drone on anything I've driven. Just a good sound. I want to hear my exhaust or I'd go stock. I have other mufflers for other sounds. I also like chambered mufflers.
