Building Eileen

Decided to make a build thread of Eileen so that I could get you guys input and encouragement to keep me motivated along the way. She is in pretty ruff shape and will need to have a ton of work to get her to what I would like her to be. She started life as a red 71 gmc short stepper with a I6 and 3 on the tree and a leaf spring rear. Along the way she has has seen some pretty ruff times and along they way. By the time the last owner got her she was pretty rustly and the little I6 was basically shot so his fix was to flat black spray bomb on top of all the rust and swap the little I6 for a worn 305 with a pretty beasty camshaft. It sounded good but had no power! I rescued her in January eager to tear her down and build her back up with the love she deserves.
My plans for her are a complete rebuild with 6-8 drop and 20" boss 338 wheels. For power she will have a 5.3 and 4l60e swapped in. Should be reliable and have enough power to keep me happy. For paint im thinking of going with the original light green color that came on some of these trucks. I also will be swapping the gmc front end for the 67-68 style chevy front. I know some of you guys might bust be for it but I love that front the most!
Here is a youtube link to the old girl as she sat when I got her.

Re: Building Eileen

Here are you guys another picture of her before I started and a few photos of the tear down. Due to the rusty old bolts it took me 2 full weekends to pull the bed apart. Surprisingly the rest of the bolts on the truck were no problem and I had the rest of it town in weekend. You can also see "Rocky" my shop buddy. He wanted to ride and didn't want to get out! He is a 5 year old pitbull that I have had since he was less than 2 months old. He is a house dog and sticks by my side everywhere I go. He is the smartest dog I have ever seen. Loves people and has a great personality. I love him like a son!

Re: Building Eileen

Still just trying to catch you guys up to where I am now. I got the frame sand blasted and put back together with all new parts. For lowering the rear has a 5" flip kit and 3" blocks to get 8" and in the front I have 3" drop spindles and 3" springs to get 6". Also got my wheels and tires and they looked to good not to mount up!

Re: Building Eileen

After getting the rolling frame back together things slowed down for me because the shop that I worked for closed down and I had to move everything out and into a storage building. But now Im managing a new shop and back to work on her! Been working on the worst part the last few weeks. The cab! A you can see from the picture here there is a good bit of rust repair work to be done. I am just test fitting the inner rocker in that picture. I want to get rid of all the rust before I start going back together with her. The most time consuming part so far is stripping off all the old factory undercoating. That stuff is really on there! been using goof off to help soften it up then wire wheeling it off. Probably 70% complete with that so far. Just gotta go get some more goof off.

Re: Building Eileen

Man this undercoating stuff is no fun! Here is a pic of the underside. You can see where I have the top part stripped to bare metal and the bottom is still coated. I have got a good bit further now than in the picture but still have to get all the night nooks and crannies.

This is what I look like after a couple hours wire wheeling on the undercoating today. Nasty stuff!

Thanks for the compliment! I will try to keep the updates coming. This is my first full frame off build. I have no body work experience at all so this is a learning experience for me!

Re: Building Eileen

Got all of the undercoating stripped off. Now got to strip the floors on the inside and get to work doing some patch work. I will be learning as I go so hopefully I can do a decent job! Have been doing a lot of research on here to find the best way of going about things. I have been second guessing myself on my paint choice. At first I had planned to just do a solid color with 503 light green. Now I am considering doing a 2 tone job. Possibly going with the 69-72 style trim with white in between the trim. Also considering the 67-68 style trim with white below the lower trim. I like the look of the 67-68 lower trim best but think I like the center white 2 tone of the 69-72 style best. And not sure if I want to do the cab above the windows white or not. Also not sure if I want to stick with the 503 light green or go with a light blue. What do you guys think? Of course if I stick with 1 solid color I could keep my stepper bed but the 2 tone style will require a fleet. I like the look of both bed types but think I would prefer the fleet simply for the extra room in the bed. (I build a fly rc airplanes and would be nice to have the bed room to haul some of the larger ones out to the field.) But its seems to be very difficult to find a fleet bed anywhere close to me. I cant afford the price it would take to order all of it new.

Re: Building Eileen

Have not been able to work on the truck as much as I would like to. Just have a lot of things going on right now. Hopefully that will change soon and I can start getting a lot more progress. But I have managed to get a little more work done on the cab. Got the passenger side front cab support and floor pan replaced.

Also got a new c10 today for parts! Had to drive 3 hours to pick it up. Its a basically a pieced together truck. The cab is a 67 with the small back window. Its on a 69 frame. It has been pieced together by a guy that had several.

The bad is its basically a piece of junk. The doors, hood, and front fenders were to bad rusted to be worth using. He gave me a title for the 69 frame but not for the 67 cab. Also had a blow out on my trailer shortly after picking the truck up. The tires were old anyways so I ended up buying a whole new set for it while I was down there so as to be sure not to have any more issues. But that was money I had wanted to spend on some c10 stuff!

The good is that it had a short fleet bed on it and the bedsides are in excellent condition! That is the primary reason I got the truck. But the guy had also bagged it recently will all new stuff so I can strip all that stuff from it and bag mine! Gave me a couple boxes of new parts that he had for it also but I have not had the time to go through them and see what I have yet.

Here are a few pics of the parts truck.

Re: Building Eileen

Dug through the parts boxes he gave me this morning and found a few good things to save me a little money. There was a new power brake booster and master cyl in there to get me fixed up with some power brakes. There were also parts to convert to disk brakes on the rear!
