steering shaft ??

Did gm use the same splines on all there columns and gear boxes. I have a 85 van column and a 68 man gear box. My shaft has only one u joint on the column side. I need one on the gear side as well. So my option is to find a u joint and cut and weld or find a shaft that will work and eliminate the rag joint. My shaft is only about 14" total. So what are your thoughts

On your first question, all of the 69-72 columns had the same splines on both the tilt and non-tilts and the 67-68's had the steering columns with one solid shaft all the way from the steering wheel to the lower rag joint. There were two different splines on the steering gears, one for manual gear boxes and another for power gear boxes so the appropriate rag joint would be needed for which ever type of gear will be used. I am of no help on the shaft cutting/welding/u-joint subject and am also unsure of your 85 van column issue but I did recently help a couple of guys out with a few pics (below thread link post #20) on the earlier keyless type van tilt column installs on their projects. Well maybe my van column is earlier caus it has no key. I forgot what year van i pulled it out of. It has a 36 spline 3/4 shaft. I read that the manual gear box was a 3/4 x 36 as well but napa says 3/4 x 32 they also say that a 95 cherokee is 3/4 x 32 so i got a shaft coming to see if will mount up to the gear box. Im hoping to eliminate the rag joint and get rid of some of the slop these trucks have. As for the top im going to have to get creative and probably weld on the old copuler or maybe i can grind the shaft to a dd and just slip the jeep shaft on we will see
