My washer tank is now a radiator overflow

Saw a thread a while back about overflow tanks, but couldn't find it again. I found this cap on a Cadillac at a salvage yard, and it fit on the washer tank. It allows connecting an overlflow hose from the radiator, and another hose if the tank gets full. I don't have a desire for windshield washers, but I had a nice washer tank and bracket, so I decided to use it for this.

Now you have a catch can. Would be nice if you made it a return tank so you can eliminate the air pocket in your rad and help your cooling. JMHO

I like the stock look that's going on there. I've seen this elsewhere, but it's always nice to have a "current" take on similar ideas.

Re: My washer tank is now a radiator overflow

If you decide to make it fully functional as a closed system for return to the radiator be sure to get a new radiator cap designed for a closed system. I did my '71 4x4 like that and it works great. I mounted mine on the pass. side just aft of the battery. Kind of symetrical when you see the washer tank on the left. Great mod.

I did that last year, I went ahead and bought a new tank and mount so I could still use my washer tank. I mounted mine on the passenger side. It works great!

Re: My washer tank is now a radiator overflow

Well, it does return coolant to the radiator because the cadillac cap has a hose that extends to the bottom of the tank. It actually is a coolant recovery cap that fits the truck washer tank. I'll take the cap off and take a picture of the underside.

Not exactly sure what it was, but it was probably late 70s early 80s, big 4 door, V8 RWD car. Deville, maybe.

You sure the plastic on that washer jug can handle hot radiator fluid?

Well, now that's a good question, and I don't know the answer. I have run it up to full operating temp several times and driven around some with no ill effect so far. It appears the washer tank is made from the same kind of plastic as a genuine overflow, but no way to be sure. I will surely let folks know if it melts!

It would be very helpful if you could find out what year Cadillac that came from. Hmmm...

Re: My washer tank is now a radiator overflow

I installed a mid 90's GM Astro Van overflow tank in my 68 GMC, it's a long thin tank and fits perfect between the battery and fender. Unless you look close you would never notice it ! I will post a photo of it in place, it is made of much thicker plastic then washer bottles and the hose length is real short to overflow nipple on Rad.......

Re: My washer tank is now a radiator overflow

Here is the way I did my 68 about 3-4 years ago.The bottle closest to the radiator is my recovery bottle.I do have the correct radiator cap with the return flow valve.
So far,I haven't had any problems with the plastic failing or even dis-coloring.
I posted this picture before in a previous thread on this subject,so it may be familiar to some here.

Is that another washer tank you have by the radiator?

Yes.Both are original reproduction tanks, brackets, caps and pick-up tubes.
The yellow looking hose on the recovery bottle runs under the wiring harness across the truck to the radiator cap.
Pretty easy install.
Since you're close by,you could just come look at it sometime.

Re: My washer tank is now a radiator overflow

Hey, I guess that answers the question if the washer tank will melt with hot water in it! I didn't notice you were not far away, that's cool. I haven't met any other forum members around here.

Re: My washer tank is now a radiator overflow

There's only 3 or 4 members in our area!
Statewide,there's quite a few!
If you ever see a 68,Anniversary Special on the road,it's probably me.I haven't seen another around here yetNot even at CTC!
Can you tell me what the name is of the color of your truck?I once saw it when these trucks were sold new and had my 57 Chevy painted the same color.

Re: My washer tank is now a radiator overflow

There was another member in Moss Point I bought some parts from, but now I forget his name. He got sick and sold his truck.

I keep an eye out for old trucks all the time, but don't see all that many. I usually drive my 55 around Ocean Springs and Biloxi a lot.

My 71 color is just called Medium green. Its not on the road yet, I'm still assembling the bed.
